I have a Border Collie named Sadie. We have been playing fetch all morning and I have also been telling her commands all day. I'm getting really bored of fetch and commands and it is way too hot to be practicing agility ('cause we can only practice outside). I need something where I don't have to go outside and do it, and I can get some energy out of Sadie. What is something we can do in the house that is fun for the both of us? Thanks

you can make up games inside.

Playing hide and go seek with toys is a fun one. To teach her the game, start by hiding the toy in front of her, in a couch cusion or someplace easy. if she seems confused, reach in and squeak the toy.

You can gradually work it to where you have her wait in another room while you hide the toy.

You can get "puzzle" toys for her too, such as a buster cube.. it has treats inside and the dog has to turn it to get it to dispence the treats.

You can maybe do outside activities earlier in the day, or later in the evening too, and find more relaxing activities when its hot outside.

Are you asking about things you can do to play during the
heat of the day? Usually animals are like people and get over
heated and require being cooled down, and being allowed to rest during hot days. You should do the exercising only in the
mornings when it is cooler out. The evenings are probably
too warm to have a hefty playtime also. There are a couple of
games I can think of that are not strenous too strenuous for a hot day. One is to play tug of war, with an old sock that can be stretched a bit. With you holding and gently pulling on
your end, and the dog pulling with his end of the sock in its'
mouth. A game of toss with a soft cloth ball is another game. Toss it across the room and let the dog retrieve it. If you have a pool, take him into it and let him retrieve some rubber toys. You can do that with a childrens wading pool also. Get your suit on and fill up the pool and let him stand in the pool and you toss the toys to him in the water. He'll get cooled off and really enjoy that game.

Absolutely not Even if your dog has water, with the temperature being 100 degrees the water itself will heat up and be of no help to the dog. Shade in high temperature also will not help as the temperature will not be very much different if at all. Bring your dog in the house and only let him/her out for short periods of time. Get a kiddie pool and or leave a sprinkler going when your dog is outside to cool off abit. Remember to change the water in the kiddie pool often as it too will heat up.

You can train or practice some warm up commands for agility.
My dogs learned how to spin over the winter when we couldn't do our agility training. Now all I have to do is start to say spin and they are already spinning waiting for their treat. If you have weave poles that can go in the house, you can work on them. Get in different spots from the entrance to the weaves and send her through them. You can also work on your distance if you have room. If you can't do that, you can teach her to weave through your legs (make a figure 8 around them) it's a good warm up exercise for agility. She's smart, it won't take her much time to figure out what you are wanting her to do.

Best bet is to get Sadie out early in the morning, or late at night, or both. Have you tried swimming? Our dogs love to be in the lake or a pool when it is really hot. Be sure to keep her hydrated - and you too :)

That depends entirely upon the size of your house. A frisky pet inside can wreck a house in minutes...broken lamps, furniture and collectibles just for starters. The best thing to do is keep her in until it cools off in the afternoon and then take her out to play/romp. Also, early in the AM is good before it gets hot.

I clear a the floor in front of our couch and I put the couch in front of the wall and I sit on the oppisite wall and throw a tennis ball againest the wall and catch it. if it doesn't come back I say fetch and Cody does it and brings it back to me. i have the same situation with my shetland sheepdog. If I catch I get 1 point if Cody catches it he gets 2 pojnt. Whoever wins wins It's so fun!

Go to Toys-R-us and buy a small plastic baby pool, fill it up and your dog should be out of energy in a few minutes...That is of coarse if Sadie likes to play in the water.

You can train in the house, or play fetch, or you can "wrestle" with her. Teach her a new command, if you want some ideas for a new command, email me.
