Two or three days ago, he ate a whole pig's ear in one sitting. The next day, he pooped A LOT. It was solid but apparently, all greasy and shiny (sorry to get so graphic, but I'm trying to be specific).

He ate fine yesterday and pooped three times versus his normal two, yet seemed a bit off. Today when I came home from work, he was a bit slow, a little lethargic. He sat on my lap and had the slight shakes. And he hasn't touched his food. He drank ALOT of water and keeps licking his mouth constantly. And he just threw up quite a bit of yellow bile. He went to his bed to lay down and is being unsocial which isn't like him. About an hour later, he threw up again. It was a tiny bit, maybe the size of a silver dollar and and it was foamy white. He also pooped in the bathroom. A small amount, kind of dark chocolate color and a greasy non-solid but not completely runny. His nose is cold and wet and the boyfriend thinks it's just a stomach bug but I'm worried. Should I call the vet?

Thanks for the advice. We took him to the emergency room and they initially gave us an estimate of $550 up front for him to stay and get fluids, but they didn't tell us what was wrong. They said they didn't really know what was wrong. At the very moment last night, neither of us had the cash available to pay them (simply because of a cash flow issue - money had gone out and money we were waiting on hadn't come in yet) so we asked if it would be ok to take him and wait it out and if he didn't improve, take him to his regular vet in the morning (because I felt my regular vet would be more up front with me). They said ok and that they would give him shots for the vomiting and the "bacterial infection" in his rear (which was causing the nasty poo) and some fluids and to just keep an eye on him.

So we brought him home and he couldn't calm down. It got progressively worse. He wouldn't stop shaking, he was soooo thirsty but they had told us no water or food orally, so he was begging and we couldn't give him anything. After about an hour and a half, he was pooping straight bright blood and eventually started vomiting blood with white foam mixed in. I was terrified, couldn't stop crying and at the moment, we knew we need to go back. Second visit back there, price had lowered to $274 and they suddenly knew what was wrong: he had HGE (hemoragghic gastroenteritis). $274 could be done so we left him overnight. We both walked out of there with our hearts breaking and now we're spending the day hoping he gets better. They called early this morning and said he was doing well, he had stopped pooing and only vomited once right after we left but that his red blood cell count was at 68% which is pretty high. So when the vet comes back in around 6pm tonight, she'll let us know.

I highly recommend that you call your vet, hun. Your dog is showing symptoms of being blocked (no appetite, vomiting, "gooey" tar-like stools, increased thirst, letharigic, shaking). Does he have a temperature?

He probably cannot pass a piece(s) of the pig ear. Most likely it is lodged (stuck) in his intestine. Your vet will do x-rays to determine location and evaluate whether or not the piece(s) should be surgically removed. I would not wait to call your vet. This condition could be fatal if not treated in time.

Let me know how the appointment goes and feel free to contact me. I will keep him in my thoughts!

Had the same sort of problem with my Bernese. He ate a load of raw hide and it started off kind of like yours. When he threw up, there were bits of white stuff that was almost like plastic. I ended up taking him to the vet's (puke sample in bag) as raw hide/pigs ears cannot be digested properly so there is was a chance that he had a blockage. My dog had to have a barium meal and X rays to make sure there was no blockage and he stayed there for 48 hours. It's serious because there are risks of dehydration, perforating the stomach or the bowel plus obviously blockages of any kind are not good. He then was put on a chicken and rice diet with some antibiotics for a week and he was perfectly fine. Never gave him rawhide again though.
I would take your dog to the vet because with what you've said and the fact that he'd eaten a whole pig's ear the day before, the symptoms are very close to what my dog had and the vet told me it's treated as an emergency. Wet nose or not, your dog is acting like it's feeling bad. Dehydration is a very real problem with the poop and puking.

I would maybe call your vet & have your dog looked at. It could be from the food or it could be from something the dog is eating outside (like my dog does alot) or it could be some other health concern that could just keep getting worse if not treated. To play it safe you should probably have the dog looked at if its happening alot. Is the food out for a long time & then you are heating it? I have a very small dog & I feed her the same food as you do & rather than letting the food stay out (if she didn't finish it) what I'll do is feed her half in the morning (& put the rest in the fridge) & then when I give her the rest of it....just to take the chill out of it I'll mix in a little warm water and she gobbles it right up.

Probably just an upset stomach. My dogs do what you are descibing occasionally. My best friends wife (a vet assistant and kennel owner) suggests to give them a little Pepto Bismol. If they are not better the next day then take them to the vet.

yes definatley call teh vet. teh yellow bile and more than likely the white foanm is form not eating but it dosn't sound good.
I would either call or tey to get him to the vets tonight. I figure you probably already cleaned teh mess up but if at all possible bring a sample with you this can possibly help the vet to determine the problem.
Good luck

I would call the vet.

My first thought was that his digestive system is out of whack.. that sometimes happens when dogs eat too much of something.. expecially something fatty, greasy, spices, or just something they arent used to. If it was just the diareah Id reccomend putting him on a bland diet for a few days to calm his system back down.

The lethargy, shakes, and not touching his food is concerning.

dark chocolate color poop? as in, almost black? that could be bleeding somewhere in his intestines.

Throwing up bile *could* be because hes drinking alot of water at one time, and has nothing on his stomache.

Call your vet and tell them what's going on.

It could be an obstruction. Although since dogs digestive systems are short if they poop that usaual means theyve eaten. Iwould watch him closely and definately take him to the vet if he isnt improving. Pigs ears are great alternatives to traditional rawhide, but they should still be supervised. good luck!

I would definitely take it to the vet. Rawhides and pig ears should be avoided- they are not easily digested. Take him to the vet as soon as possible!
