Okay, my dog, who is a two-year-old Jack Russell Terrier, has been taught some months ago how to retrieve things when someone tells him to get something and bring that thing to back that person, and now he does it all the time when things fall onto the floor and people don't even ask him to retrieve it. Obviously, he's learned that if he picks up things and gives them to people, he'll get a dog treat. My parents give him treats every single time he does this little retrieving trick and, since he does it all the time, that adds up to a lot of treats. I constantly tell them that he doesn't need a treat for every time he does it, but they won't stop giving him so many treats. Should my dog be given treats for every time he does his retrieving trick even though he's already learned how to do it well?

I need to name my new dog and i really like the name Betsy for her but I can't use that. don't ask. Anyway do you know any names with the same ring as Betsy? It's a hound so i want to give her a kind of southern sounding name like Merigold.

He was fine this morning, ate his regular dog food, and has layed around the yard all day. We have a small creek near us and live in the country. He is up to date on shots and is usually pretty healthy.

Our dog is almost 8 years old and we think he has Arthritis. We are going to a vet soon, but we wanted to know how much it is going to cost. Also, would he have to take it the rest of his life?

Any other information would be helpful!

Thank you!

We just got a wonderful std. poodle puppy 3 days ago and I've been calling around asking groomers about pricing. There are so many types of cuts for a poodle! We are not showing her, nor do we plan to. She is going to be a family pet only and we live in the N.Carolina and plan to go to the beach at least a few times a month so we want something that will be low maintenance and keep her cool. She is only 11 weeks old and currently is not clipped. I guess an additional question would be what is the best age to start getting them professionally groomed? Thanks :)

hello,
i have a 14 month old boy pom, and i took him to get a hair cut about a month ago... up until that time he loved getting a bath.... now for the last few times that i've given him a bath he thinks it's punishment... he cries, kicks, screams, and does anything and everything to get out of the bathtub..... he was never like this until he went to get groomed.... i don't know what to think....but assume that they scared him because he's terrified now..... how can i solve this problem..... i try to calm him down in the bath tub.... but he's still terrified.... he tries to jump into my arms... and get out of the bathtub, and get away from the water.... any suggestions anyone?

Wouldn't that indicate the barest minimum level of research into a breed to determine suitability? Or am I too idealist?
For instance, people who own Rock Welders probably shouldn't be allowed to breed them. Or Docksinds? Or Chiwawas?
Perhaps the person who is interested in Besingees, shouldn't buy one?

Yes, I have asked this question before, but not to many people answered so I thought I would try again. Anyone else ever feel these things...I know that its suppose to be best for her, unwanted babies, lower risk for infections, cancer, etc... I don't want her to be in pain, I am nervous about the anestetic, all that is bothering me. She trusts me yet I am taking out her body parts, not like she wants this done. I know its a dog but she is my best friend too. Anyone else ever feel this way? Also, my vet has 30 yrs exp but does not specialize in dachshunds, is the operation the same for all dogs? Thanks..sorry for asking again.

Female 8m, pretty boisterous and lively girl, not vicious never growled at anyone apart from when playing! She lives with a very quiet 4yr old male Jack Russell who barks when necessary but nothing over the top. However she is a complete yap. I know JRT's are renowned for being yappy ankle biters but I have never encouraged her to bark, she does this of her own accord at anything, in fact I think she rather likes the sound of her own voice! She barks at people when we walk down the street, she takes off in the park if she is off the lead when she see's another person or another dog and barks like mad at them and goes totally deaf to my shouting! She then gives up and comes running back so I can't scald her as she has come back to me and I dont want to confuse her! If she is on the lead and barks I simply tug on the lead, stop walking and if necessary turn and walk the other way. She is not stupid and has worked this out so she is ok on the lead then when I let her off she barks!
