first you have to get him to trust you really well so he can lie on his back without worrying.

then when hes on his back or side take a treat and put it by his face

pull the treat in the direction you want him to roll,
gently nudge him if it doesnt work

give him the treat when he has completed the trick
keep doing this

all it takes is persistance.

Teaching a dow a new trick isn't as tough as it seems. Anytime you want to alter the behavior of an animal, you must approach it through a behavioralistic approach to cognitive psychology. Don't worry, it's not as complicated as it sounds! First, you have use a method called "shaping". Shaping refers to rewarding your animal after approximations to the desired result. Begin by showing how and then having him lay down. Reward him every time he does that. Next, stop rewarding him for the previous behavior and begin rewarding him only when he lays on his side. Then, begin rewarding your canine only after he finally rolls over. It may take some time, but with the right patience and a clever dog, it's sure to work.

From what I've read, you've got to get lay-down taught first. Give the command to lay down, then push the dog onto it's side and all the way over giving the command to roll over. Praise and repeat until the dog begins to do it with less force, and eventually all on their own.

Don't. This trick may look cute, but it can result in twisting of the intestines, and that isn't cute at all.
