the first thing to do is find a puppy, if you know what breed you want, find a breeder who has champions, and inquire about what they require to purchase a show prospect puppy

then the local kennel clubs offer handling classes, and puppy matches, these are informal "shows" where you and your puppy go and practice for "point shows"

after you practice for a few months, you can find point shows at www.infodog.com, and a magazine called The AKC Gazette, and they have instructions on how to enter

just send in your entry form, a check and then show up on time

its really not hard to show dogs, winning is another thing
but i would concentrate on just starting off, get yoru foot in the door then you can meet handlers who are winning,
those are the people you want to watch and study,

there is a book by frank sabella if you can find it, about successful show handling, get it if you can and absorb it cover to cover

good luck

One thing to remember when showing your dog is to have fun and enjoy it. Don't take it to seriously as results vary from show to show. Ask questions of judges and other competitors for handling advice. Also your breed club can help. Always start with a clean dog and dress to suit the conditions and the show.

Go to www.akc.org & find the closest chapter of the breed club of the breed you are interested in, find out when their meetings are & go. This is where you will meet the dedicated breeders that are showing & working to improve the breed. Mingle & find the ones who are willing to mentor you - they need all the help they can get on show days, and most welcome someone willing to work their way up - from helping transport, grooming & prep work, to handing them dogs at ringside to start. Observe, absorb, and enjoy!

well, it depends on your pets behavior and appearence.

does the dog need training?
does the dog need professional grooming?

i would start off with behavior.
is your dog able to sit still and let other people he/she doesn't know touch him?

after you think his behavior is pretty much down, i would take the animal to get groomed. it needs to look sharp.
