Female 8m, pretty boisterous and lively girl, not vicious never growled at anyone apart from when playing! She lives with a very quiet 4yr old male Jack Russell who barks when necessary but nothing over the top. However she is a complete yap. I know JRT's are renowned for being yappy ankle biters but I have never encouraged her to bark, she does this of her own accord at anything, in fact I think she rather likes the sound of her own voice! She barks at people when we walk down the street, she takes off in the park if she is off the lead when she see's another person or another dog and barks like mad at them and goes totally deaf to my shouting! She then gives up and comes running back so I can't scald her as she has come back to me and I dont want to confuse her! If she is on the lead and barks I simply tug on the lead, stop walking and if necessary turn and walk the other way. She is not stupid and has worked this out so she is ok on the lead then when I let her off she barks!

Shock collar. Every time she barks, zap. She'll learn eventually.

Spray with a water bottle every time she barks unnecessarily. Jack Russell's are known to be vocal though, and think they are much bigger than they are. Big hearts. They are quite territorial. She may feel more secure and within her territory when she is on the lead. I would suggest going on the web in search of on-line dog trainers that would take your question. Good luck, it's not only annoying to you, but I'm sure other people and other dogs as well. A good trainer may be able to help you the most with a few tricks to alleviate that behavior.

Keep a squirt bottle or toy water-gun handy. Spray her and command "QUIET!".

*update* A lot of people are recommending shock collars but there are also bark collars that spray a burst of citronella. I have a Dachshund and if she is outside in the yard after dark, the sounds of the nocturnal wildlife in the trees will make her go so nuts that even spraying water or shouting at her won't deter her. The spray collar works like a charm. It is called Gentle Spray.

We too have a Jack Russell and too she barks at everything. I'd suggest a bark collar. It gives them a little zap everytime they bard. You can get them at nearly every pet store.

Try holding her mouth. Hold it together firmly so she learns not to bark. If she barks alot, keep holding her mouth, and if she doesn't like it, she'll know to stop barking.
