Okay, my dog, who is a two-year-old Jack Russell Terrier, has been taught some months ago how to retrieve things when someone tells him to get something and bring that thing to back that person, and now he does it all the time when things fall onto the floor and people don't even ask him to retrieve it. Obviously, he's learned that if he picks up things and gives them to people, he'll get a dog treat. My parents give him treats every single time he does this little retrieving trick and, since he does it all the time, that adds up to a lot of treats. I constantly tell them that he doesn't need a treat for every time he does it, but they won't stop giving him so many treats. Should my dog be given treats for every time he does his retrieving trick even though he's already learned how to do it well?

I don't give him treats all the time for this trick. Only my parents do.

hmm.

if you stop giving the dog treats, he may stop retrieving things.

because he may start thinking there is no reward in the end.

you have gotten the dog used to getting a treat everytime.

i suggest you try and ween him off of thr treats SLOWLY.
that is, if you don't want to buy so many treats.

I think it is great that your dog does this for you! The treats should be put on hold for a little while to see if he will still do it. If he does still pick things up try rubbing his/her belly and saying good boy/girl. Only treat him everyonce and a while.

no, you shouldnt give him a treat. he learned the trick, and you usually just give treats when you are teaching the trick. once he learns it, teach him another trick. if you keep giving him treats every time he picks something up, then he will just get fat and lazy. no offense.
