I find that besides brushing my black lab, I still have to sweep the kitchen floor (hardwood) everyday because he still sheds so much. Is shedding worse in Spring and Fall? Only had this dog for 6 months, never had a dog before. :) Thanks.

I just had to put my dog Mookie put down yesterday. She was such a gentle and loving dog and it was really hard for us to let her go, but we did not want to see her in any pain. She had severe pancreatitis and started developing calcification in her stomach area. We went through good and bad days with her, and 3 weeks later she just would not get up. The vet said she would have to be fed through tubes and in intensive care for months to be healed, and even after she would never feel like her old self. I have had 2 dogs put down in my lifetime, and I just wanted to know that when the Vet injects them with whatever it is that puts them to sleep if it hurts them in any way. I feel terrible putting a dog down and hope that in the situation it was the right thing to do. I did have her tranquilized before she got her shots, i hope that helped in any way and that she went out peacefully. Thanks...

I have two puppies (wiemeraner mix) and they are brother and sister. They are almost 4 months old and are getting big. They always want to play fight with each other, which is fine, but it often turns too rough or even bloody. I understand they are puppies and are full of energy, but I just don't want to see one get hurt. How do I discourage this behavior with out making them think "play fighting" is bad?

I'm thinking of buying him a kiddie pool so that he can lie down in it to keep cool. I know that shaving is not good for him.

When I confronted him about it, we ended up wrestling on the front lawn, and what made me mad is that the kids in the neighborhood were cheering for the mailman. Plus he was doing better from the extra weight. My question is, should I bug a dog?

I live in Wisconsin and my dog is too big to bathe in the laundry sink in the basement. My hubby and I are waiting until it warms up so we can give the dog a bath outside. But, I'm just curious where most people (not living in warm climates) bathe their dogs during winter months. Thanks.

thought you might be interested in the skin biopsy results taken on the "crusty" puppy, that I asked questions about. She had 'follicular parakeratosis' found in female Rottweillers.A hereditary, genetic disease that also causes other internal and external adnormalities (her deformed tail). Prognosis = POOR
But thanks for your help anyways.

I don't care about the size, it just seems that I am having an easier time finding growth scales for small dogs. Either way, we'll love him. He looks lik ehe might be a Tibetan Mastiff, but they are HUGE!

We have a deaf puppy, and need to get him a collar that vibrates and beeps(so we can find him) He is 9 weeks old and will be deaf permantly so we need a collar that can grow with him. Does any one know where to find them and how much they cost? I do NOT want a shock collar, just something that will wake him up and let him know that he needs to pay attention. He likes to sleep in some of the hardest place to find so I would like it to beep or make a noise of some sort(like the thing that you can attach to your keys to find them) Any help at all will be appreciated.
Thank you

I have these vitamins for my dog that we won in a draw from the vet about 2 years ago. In the package, we won a case of vitamins called "vi-sorbits". My question is when do these go bad? I never gave him alot, maybe 10 altogether. But now I read the package and these are good for him. Whe do they go bad and are they still ok to give to him 2-3 years later? (maybe 2-4) I mean, 2-3, 2-4 years after you purchase them. Thanx for your help!

I've been looking into dog breeds for some time now, but each one has something that will not work for my lifestyle (German Shepherd- often bad with cats, Newfoundland- constant slobber). Here's my life- both parents work all day, and I go to school. So that is about 8 hours home alone. We have 2 cats, a medium to large backyard, and a relatively large house. Our family loves to play outside and exercise when we get home. Very active once we are home but are not home from 7-3. Based on what our situation is, what dog breed would anyone recommend?

PS- NOTHING SMALL, I don't want some tiny Chihuahua or Westie to trip on at home, this is why I like german shepherds and newfoundlands. Good sized dog (maybe 60 lbs+?)

I took him to the vet, and he has us scheduled for xrays this friday. Vet said something along the lines of a bone problem in the elbow. The dog is a German Shepard, 12 months old, and 70lbs. He limps on his right front leg, and his elbow is swollen. If you push on the elbow from the outside, it makes a crackling noise like my knee does when I get up from the floor. He's not showing any signs of pain when you press on his leg, elbow, or shoulder. But he's also not the type to show pain.

Obviously, I have to wait until friday for a prognosis from doc, but does anyone have any ideas for whats wrong?

A few months ago I was walking my dog when we witnessed a car accident. It was loud, complete with squealing brakes, metal crunching and the impact. Ever since then, my dog gets tense around approaching cars. Sometimes she won't even leave the front of our house. What can I do to help her get over this traumatic experience?
