I adopted my pit bull puppy from a local animal shelter yesterday, and want to begin socializing asap. He is approx. 7-8 wk old neutered male. I will start walks around our neighborhood but I'm worried that won't be enough interaction for him. (We live on a military base and I don't see too many people dog-walking.) We are also pretty much in the middle of the desert with every "big" city at least an hour's drive away. Unfortunately, our town does not have a petsmart/petco or any dog parks either.

Should I make the drive out to "the city" and take him to dog parks/Petsmart there? I want him to take obedience classes, so this will eventually happen. What can I do for daily interaction/socializing here though? Any ideas?

While I fully encourage those looking for new canine companions to find their faithful pet at the animal shelter or a breed specific rescue, I also believe that adopting puppies from good/responsible breeders is an equally good route. I strongly discourage the sale of puppies at stores and inexperienced dog owners who want to "make a buck" with a couple of litters. I dispise puppy mills.

So, what do you think in terms of good vs. bad breeder and what is your opinion about adopting from a shelter/rescue?

I just want to know if there is anything I can do to help her with the discomfort. The puppies are still nursing 2-3 times a day. I call the puppies "my little parahnas". HELP! obviously she is absolutely full of milk (and herself, but that's another matter).

I have four poodles. ! i got as a puppy and three as adolecents. One of the adolecents has extreem submisive behavior. Almost to the point of urinating. She has been with us for weeks. No one behaives any other then loving to her, no shouting hollering or loud behavior. she cowers and attempts to hide when people come near. we reward her for behaving curious and aproaching people. but she back slides extreemly through out the days. at times its even hard to get her to come in the house from a potty trip. Any suggestions on what you might have done with your submisive puppy that worked.I am seeing very little to no improvement with food driven reward and atention reward seems to scare her.

if you buy an adult dog, will it still bond to you the way a puppy would if it had been raised with you?
also, any pros/cons of either choice?

Check out this latest posting on the AVMA web site.

To paraphrase, the ASPCA doesn’t buy menu foods explanation for the pet food contamination being caused by aminopterin. The symptoms are not consistent with aminopterin and the finding has not been corroborated by the FDA (or even a second lab)…

We started to mix in Nutro Natural Choice with my dogs food roughly a month ago now. However, my dogs a Husky and Malamute still seem to be getting runny stools.

The vet isn't really sure what it can be, since there blood test results have come back normal and they aren't showing any signs of sickness, other than the runny stools.

We can't afford a food that is more expensive than the Nutro Natural Choice as that was $36 for a 40 pound bag. We also don't want to go the raw route as it's not something we want to feed our dogs.

I have heard that Costco sells a decent dog food that is pretty high quality, but there isn't a Costco anywhere near here, store locater doesn't even turn up one store and they don't ship that particular food out.

We are running out of ideas on what to feed our dogs.

Anything that we can try and isn't very expensive?

I have a 4 month old puppy. He really bites everything he sees and this morning, he happened to bite my pants. As usual, I shacked my pants so he could get off me.

But then I noticed his top canine tooth broke off. I took a look at it and it must have been atleast half of the tooth. You can actually see the inner whole of the tooth going straight down.

After I took a look at him, I noticed he was bleeding from his broken tooth.

What should I do???

I have no idea on what to do, and its a bit worrysome.

Thanks.

When we go for walks or go to the pet store or my mom's (she has cats), my dog is so bad and tries to jump on other dogs/cats & people when I'm walking him. He has been to obedience training already!!! I am sick of him trying to jump on people and dogs when we go for walks, but its like once he sees someone his ears turn off & he doesn't hear me anymore. I had a gentle leader & that was kinda workign then my lil sis broke it, should I buy a new one? But that also doesn't work when he gets really excited..plz help, its sooo annoying.
