I'm thinking of buying him a kiddie pool so that he can lie down in it to keep cool. I know that shaving is not good for him.

Hi there I am a Veterinarian Tech and also a proud mom of my Newfies. The kiddie pool is a wonderful idea!! My Newfs LOVE the kiddie pools I have for them! Make sure you get the hard-plastic pools as opposed to the blow-up kind (those will last all of 10 minutes before someone pops it!). Also, make sure you have water bowls that are always full in the shade. I always have two water bowls full with water and the other two with ice cubes (ice-blocks are also good). My Newfs like to grab a cube and chew on it or run around with it. Also, provide your dog with a lot of shade. Newfoundlands do not do well in heat at all. It isn't even a bad idea to have a water-soaked body towel or two for them to lay out on. Please keep a good eye on your Newf when he is outside, the breed can overheat very fast!! Sprinklers are also a fun way to keep them cool! Just be careful that there are no sharp parts because my Newfs will literally run through the sprinkler and often sit right on top of it! Don't shave your Newf... they need that fur for protection and for waterproofing. Have fun and be creative!!! From one Newf mom to another! :)

I do not have a Newfie, but I have a Bernese Mountain Dog. I use a kiddie pool and a mister for him even though when he is outside he is in the shade. I also take a freeze plastic containers (like the ones for whipped topping or tupperware) with water in them, and then throw them in the pool during the hottest part of the day (usually 2-5 pm) to cool the water.

I have 3 newfies and I have kiddie pools for them. On really warm days I will spray them down with the water hose. I also have at least 5 gallons of cool water for them in a shaded area. But luckily the weather where I live is fairly mild. The summers don't get too hot, and the winters don't get too cold.

I don't know what the weather is like there but I live in very hot weather also. Every June I buy one of those baby pools and put it in the back yard for my dogs. It makes them smelly and dirty becaus they are outside dogs only due to allergies (or they would be in the bed wih me!) It gets 105 degrees F almost everyday in the summer. My dogs love there pool! Also make sure he has a lot of shade and dirt to dig in...yeah he will be dirty lol but dogs cool off by digging and finding the cool moist dirt. Good luck!

A newfie breeder lives not to far from me and she uses kiddy pools and a sprinkler system to keep hers cool. She also provides alot of shade and if it's really hot she also puts industrail fans out side for them.

Newfies are very special dogs.

I have labs. They have a kiddie pool. I will save milk jugs and freeze water in them and then put them in the pool. They keep water cool and the dogs have something to play with.
