My wife wants to get a short-haired, black and tan miniature dachshund puppy. I have little experience with dogs, especially buying them.

I'm not sure (a) what qualities to look for when selecting a puppy and (b) the average price range for a paperless miniature dachshund.

Is there anything in particular to look for in the way of temperment, physical characteristics, etc? My wife found a breeder online that has some puppies (w/o papers) for $700 each. This seems like an astronomical price (I'm a cat person who is used to being able to adopting strays for no cost) but honestly I have no idea if it's a reasonable price.

Any help?

We currently have a bull terrier, and he is very sweet and smart... He has just turned 1 and we were looking into getting another dog. But we wanted to get a small breed. I was looking in to getting a chihuahua, but I want to know if that would be safe cause bull terriers are so strong and playful...
I had a great dane and a chuhuahua when I was growing up and the dane took care of the little one and I guess I wanted to do it again... Or could you suggest a good smaller breed with a bull terrier?

I've noticed recently that everytime I go out and see a Lab that he/she is obese. I dont just mean a few! I think I've seen about 20 of them just this last month and every single one of them was fat. I've been noticing this for the past year. When I was a child, the labs I encountered were all normal, healthy weights.

So it's got me wondering, are their owners just uneducated about diet and overfeeding unhealthy foods? Or does it seem that the majority of bloodlines of labs today have a genetic predispostion for obesity?

Our dog keeps getting on our beds, couches, ext. and he won't stop. No matter how much we scold him, he still gets on them , we've tried putting things on top of the couches and beds, but he finds a way to get on them. We need a new solution, and FAST!

My 4 pit bulls, whenever outside playing in the yard, will spend a numerous amount of time eating grass. And then of course vomit it all back up on the rug an hour later. Irritating habit, but my brother's chocolate lab eats grass too. Howcome?

I walk a 10 month old dog that is brilliant with other dogs. The problem is that he wants to play with every dog he see's. And as we all know, not every dog you meet is friendly. I tend to keep him on the lead and when we are in the park if he see's another dog he lays down and will not budge until it is out of site. Also if another dog comes close by he is pulling really hard on the lead to go and play with it. How do i pursuade him to get up once he has laid down and also how do i prevent him from pulling on his lead to get to the other dog?
Any idea's anyone !!!

My dog has been seriousely aggresive in the past 4 months. He actually injured me two times and make me go to hospital!!! He only does that to me at nights. Does anybody know why he attacks me? Is there a hope that I can train him? Or I have to put him to sleep?

Looks hilarious, but seriously, I've noticed alot of female dogs do this no matter what the breed, even when they're fixed. Is she really trying to express dominance over them, even though she's been spayed now for 3 years? She only recently started doing it.

My dog is limping, but can put some pressure on his leg. I was told that unless it is a severe and obvious break, that there is basically nothing you can do for the dog other than rest. Is this true? It just happened yesterday. He let's me touch his whole leg and foot, but he just won't walk on it.

I am a 23 year old struggling student and I have a 4 year old Shih Tzu. I took him to the vet yesterday because he was very sick. The vet told me he needed to keep my dog over night to preform tests on him. I called the vet this morning and found out my dog has liver disease and mentioned something about hepatitis (obviously a canine form of it). My vet was not very imformative and just told me I had to start my dog on medication and take him in for a biopsy. He told me that it could be terminal. I have been trying to search Google on this subject, but all I get are symptoms and how to diagnos it. I just want to know how serious this is. Have you had a pet with the same problem? What was the out come. Was it costly to treat?
