My wife wants to get a short-haired, black and tan miniature dachshund puppy. I have little experience with dogs, especially buying them.

I'm not sure (a) what qualities to look for when selecting a puppy and (b) the average price range for a paperless miniature dachshund.

Is there anything in particular to look for in the way of temperment, physical characteristics, etc? My wife found a breeder online that has some puppies (w/o papers) for $700 each. This seems like an astronomical price (I'm a cat person who is used to being able to adopting strays for no cost) but honestly I have no idea if it's a reasonable price.

Any help?

i bought my miniature long haired dachshund on line it cost me $450 and with papers.

when you select a puppy from the litter make a loud noise and whichever one of the puppy doesn't get scared of the noise that's what you pick.

$700 is expensive but i guess it depends on the breeder of the dog. The dog probably come from a Champion line.

go to http://www.akc.org and look for dachshund breed it will tell you everything you want to know about dachshunds breed

Look for a dachshund with:
almond shaped eyes that are dark rimmed
round ears that are set high on the head
a black nose
a long neck
a straight back with an arched abdomen
a broad chest
and a fluid gait

Dachshunds are extremely loving and are good at protecting their master. They were bred to be hunting dogs, so they like to burrow into blankets and are of moderate activity. Doxies are one person dogs, so your puppy might bond with just one of you; but if you show it love it'll return it. They are excellent in temperment, I have two and the only thing that they want to do with after I get home from work is give me kisses and follow me around EVERYWHERE. I think that 700 dollars is a bit high for a dachshund puppy without papers. I don't know where you are, but I got my female for $200.00. My male was a gift. I wouldn't pay that much for one.
If you really want a dachshund but don't want to pay that much, try http://www.petfinder.com they have purebred dogs and puppies that are looking for a home. Also try your local paper.

I would look on http:/www.puppyfind.com you can pick a state and they are from breeders all over. people will even ship them. prices can be from $300 and up. $700 is a little steep for me. and if you are not planing on breeding than don't worry about papers. There is also the mid west dachshund rescue. they rescue dachshunds and their prices are about $200 or more, but adopting a rescued homeless puppy is a good thing too. good luck

Dashunds are a wonderful breed to own. I have had five of them myself in the past. The only thing negative I will say about them is they are barkers. But if you are looking for a good family pet they are the one to buy. If you are looking for one without papers the price could still be high but finding them will be hard. If you buy one from a breeder you will pay high $$. If you want to know more about the breeds physical characteristics try to find a site online for this breed, it will tell you what to look for when buying a daschund.

Unless there's going to be someone at your house all day, interacting with the puppy, or you're allowed to take your puppy to work with you, you should get a puppy. I just adopted a 1yr old dashchund and it was the best decision i could make. My fiance was bugging me to get her a Doxie puppy but I refused. Her cousin got two puppies and she leaves them at home all day....sure enough, they've torn countless thing to shreds and are now VERY unrully, because they have no pack structure....I really think you should adopt.

you should use a reputable breeder. ask breeder to see vet clearance for parents and puppies. look for trouble with spine and knees. look at cleanliness of kennel space and how breeder responds to questions. a good one doesn't mind answering questions or showing papers. make absolutely sure to both parents before buying puppy. one way to check puppy is lay the puppy on its back in your arms and a good puppy won't fight or try to twist away. check for clean eyes and no nasal dicharge.
