70 is way plenty warm.

When I lived in the mountains in Colorado, I insulated the dog house by putting carpet all over the inside. I then mounted a light socket, hooked to a switch in the house. I covered the light with a wire mesh to protect it and the dog.
I could turn on the light when it got real cold out (like 10 below 0 or so) and the 40W bulb I had in there would heat the doghouse up to about 60 degrees, even when it got really cold out at night.

The dog loved it. If he was out in the yard and saw the light come on in his house (through the dog flap) he would run in there and curl up. He was a shorthair dog.

I think that 70 degrees is a good temperature to keep a healthy dog warm outside, especially if the dog is used to being outside and has grown winter fur.

That said, I would like to know why this dog is housed outside rather than kept inside? When people have dogs, they should be members of the family - dogs are pack animals and want to be with their pack, not stuck outside by themselves. Being left outside causes many dogs to become nuisances through barking and digging, or find ways to get out and run loose. They don't get adequate exercise and training to be happy dogs, nor do they have a pack they belong to. It's unnatural for dogs to be solitary like that.

If the dog absolutely cannot be inside your home, I would say to encourage your parents to put an ad up to find this dog a better home. The dog deserves better than being left outside by himself.

In the meantime, please make sure that you change the hay frequently. Hay very easily gets moldy which can cause skin and other health issues for your dog. Cedar chips would probably be a better choice for the inside of the dog house than hay - as long as they are covered up by blankets that are washed frequently.

A dog is a ansester of a wolf who know how to survive in the wild below temps. Any dog can survive as long as they have more food than normal so they can build up their fat percent and also a coverd aera perferably not on the ground directly. a blanket or doorstep rug also works too. A puppy may need a little more than that but I wouldn't worry about it to much.
P.S. Ditto on the 13! ME2 with 1 male dog, 1 pregnat female and 4 kittens and their mother! (You could say I am an outdoor living animal expert almost) MCM

I think you are doing a good job, for as young as you are. But I would not use the blankets, because they do get wet and freeze pretty easily. Hay is good, cedar wood chips are what I like to use. You can get them at walmart for about five dollars a bag, and they help make your dog warm, at the same time keeping them smelling good and rid of fleas. That way, when the weather changes, your dog won't be too hot or too cold.

Don't use blankets because they do freeze. Use lots of hay but better yet, talk you parents into having your dog in the garage or even better, in your house. Thiink how miserable your dog is being in the cold and tied to a dog house. Dogs like to be with their pack and thats you. Why have a dog that is tied up and left outside?????

70 isn't cold at all...well where I am from anyways! I have a husky and the temps get to -20 to -40(celcius) at times in the winter and he just loves it...me on the other hand, brrrrrr. But I still take him out for walks (bundled to the nines). He is very accustom to the weather here and most dogs seem to get accustom to their environment a lot easier than humans. I would say you are in great shape with the set up you have! Just keep those blankets as dry as you can.

Yes, I would say 70 degrees is a fair temperature. I have goats that are kept outside in cold weather, and they are fine, so your dog should be fine in a 70 degree dog house. (I know what you mean about people saying bad things. It drives me crazy when people do that! I'm only 12.)

P.S Crazy Chic's answer does not make sense with this question! :|

70 degrees is plenty warm enough to keep a dog warm, don't forget they have fur coats. To the dog, it could be 90 degrees in there :).

70 is alright for a big dog, but maybe you should bring your dog in the house when it's below freezing.

Sorry for not answering you question first, but you just answered one of mine. You said the mom dog and her son mated! you are not suppose to do that. You are a bad owner . Shame on you. They are to close in relation. You are suppose to watch your dog when she is in heat. The closest relation they should have to mate is at least cousins,...Bad Owner

I just read you are 13..so I guess it is your parents fault. They should have got info on mating and also taking care of dogs before trying to raise them.

You should keep your dog inside with you:( He is a part of the family right? I don't think you should have a dog if you don't think it is good enough to stay indoors with you. But,
70 degrees is warm enough if he must stary outside. You should go to a pet store and buy bedding you can put in his dog house to keep him warm. I would say a blanket, but that might get wet and freeze. Also he may chew it up and eat the stuffing which would be bad for him.
