The dogs will be relatively small, but other than that there is no way to tell what they'll be like until after they are born. Very often the female's genes are dominant (as far as body type and coloring is concerned), but that's not always the case.
Because these are two very different breeds of dog, there is no "breed info" available on a mix. There's also no way to judge the pups' temperaments until after they're born and are nearly 8-9 weeks old. Every dog is unique, regardless of breed.
If you know the person who has the dogs, see if they'll let you spend some time with the mom and dad; this will give you a general idea of the parent-dogs' temperaments (which are often passed on to some extent to the pups). Otherwise, you'll just have to wait until you can meet with the pups...

I have a three year old rescue Dachsund - Rat Terrier mix. I didn't see the father but the mother was a black and tan dachshund and my dog has that coloring but much taller than a pure bred doxie. Everything about him is dachshund except his long legs. His sister from the same litter is more like the rat terrier, almost chihuahua looking. The two couldn't be more different. She's a lap dog and he has to be out about and running around. He is very funny playful and does some crazy things. Very protective and loyal. Luvs to dig and chase anything that moves. I read that they need structure and a daily routine to live by to be their happiest. My dog is on a routine of am walk, pm walk and than a set play time after dinner. He's awesome and worth all the time it takes to walk and play with him everyday.
And the comment about mutts. I would own a "mutt" any time they are loving loyal and can fill your life with happiness.

We just adopted a male whose mother was a rat terrier, pregnant when she was abandoned. She had 4 pups, two boys and two girls, the girls died shortly after birth. The males both have many dachshund traits. Floppy ears, doxie legs, tails and feet, but coloring more of rat. Ours guy is 6 mo old and what a character, he loves our Beagle and they play well together. I read up on both breeds as they are going to have traits of both. He is going to go to doggie kindergarten now that he is 6 mo so he can learn to stay and come. He is very smart but also stubborn! He travels well, no anxiety like our rescue Beagle has, barks a bit at strangers.

I have had a rat terrier Dacshund mix for about a year and a half he is very lovable smart and loves to see everyone happy. He loves children but does have to be socialized with other animals before just being thrown out to play. However once is introduced he will play with other dogs. He was easily house broken and learns tricks quickly. The only problem I have had with him is that he has tarted to urinate in the house after being completely house broken he is also allergic to fleas. He is very loyal and sensitive to your emotions. Over all I think he is the best especially when I went looking for a Yorkie and he found me

to the first answer, its not like mutts are a sin. most of the time, mutts are better than purebreeds unless you want to show. And you really can't tell what the dog will be like. Sometimes it will be most like the dachshund, sometimes like the rat terrier, or maybe a balanced mix of both of the dogs behavior and temperment.

Since they are a mixed breed, there is no way to predict what they will be like. It depends on which breed they get the most dominant genes from.
