I walk a 10 month old dog that is brilliant with other dogs. The problem is that he wants to play with every dog he see's. And as we all know, not every dog you meet is friendly. I tend to keep him on the lead and when we are in the park if he see's another dog he lays down and will not budge until it is out of site. Also if another dog comes close by he is pulling really hard on the lead to go and play with it. How do i pursuade him to get up once he has laid down and also how do i prevent him from pulling on his lead to get to the other dog?
Any idea's anyone !!!

go to obedience classes,,, you will learn how to teach your dog to walk on leash without pulling,, and your dog will learn to be social when other dogs are present... he lays down because he is showing submission ( not a bad thing) also try walking him with a prong collar ( NOT a strangle choke chain) this will help as it corrects the dog gently ( although it looks barbaric) just as a mother dog would , by gently applying pressure evenly around his neck ( please note, he cannot get hurt with the prong collar as there is a "dead ring" in the links thereby prohibiting the dog from air restriction

You have to take control. Teaching them to "heal" will help. When a dog is walked correctly he should be right along side you, not out in front. If he's out front...He's In Charge! He won't listen to you if he thinks he's the alpha. You have to take charge. This starts by walking him correctly; but also, you have to be stronger with the dog. Don't "ask" him to get up. You have to tell him. Take the leash, and with confident energy, give it a quick, light tug, and start walking. Act as if "I'm walking now, and you better come with me." Dogs crave leadership, and will follow strong, confident leadership. Be the Boss!

Teach him the "Heel" command. Using treats ofcourse. Make him stay close to your heel as soon as you say heel. he will understand and you can make him do that when ever he pulls the leash. some dogs are very much into pulling and nothing can be done except getting a choke that will slow him down a bit.

has he had a obedience training . if not then i would get him in a obedience class.. if the 10 month old is a large dog special collar is called for. it is called a pinch collar it does not hurt the neck it just gives a little pinch to get the dogs attention i have had one on my neck it only puts presser on the neck..

This is a very tough situation. The dog should be on a non- pully type leash, and should be fed a treat if he does not play with the dog.
