Yes to the vet for sure. Once the teeth are cleaned or an infection is cleared up, better dental care is a good idea. If your dog is older this can be a lot harder than it sounds.
If you use the toothbrush idea, make sure that you start off with just getting the dog to like the toothbrush. Use healthy rewards and only spend a little time at first. Your vet can also give you a liquid solution that you put on a cotton ball and rub on the dogs gum line. This can be easier than maneuvering a brush.
I also like a product called oxyfresh from my pet supply store. It comes in a liquid that you put in the dog water and a gel that you put on the gums. Remember, you don't have to clean the inside of the teeth like a human's teeth. The focus should be more on the outside of the teeth. Believe it or not, I also find floss helpful for my little guy on his front teeth where they are really close together. The initial cleaning for your dog may be expensive but worth it. Let it help motivate you to keep your dog's teeth clean and avoid another cleaning bill. High quality food is also important.
Good luck! Clean teeth and gums will really help your dog's long term health.

I would strongly suggest taking your dog to your veterinarian for a professional tooth cleaning. If the breath is that bad there could be an abscess or other infection. It can also be a sign of gum disease. Regular dental cleanings are necessary to protect not just the teeth but to prevent bacteria from moving to organs such as the heart and liver. Professional dental cleanings can be pricey but they can add years to your dog's life which to any pet lover is well worth the price.
After the cleaning I would suggest regular brushing of your dog's teeth. Everyday is optimal but even once or twice a week is better than nothing. The best dog toothpaste is an enzymatic toothpaste called C.E.T. that you can get from your veterinarian. It comes in different flavors and works much better than the stuff you buy at the pet store. I will mention that I am a certified veterinary technician.

First, take a trip to your veterinarian for a tooth examination and cleaning. A lot of the time when dogs have really bad breath, it is due to having tooth infections and cavities - those require medical treatment.
Second, change of diet. What you feed your dog makes a big difference in their overall health and well being, and bad diets can cause a dull coat, itching, bad breath, bad gas, and a plethora of other issues. Find a high quality, organic food for your dog such as Innova, California Naturals, etc. If you can't afford the good foods, try Blue Buffalo, which is a higher-grade commercial food sold at most PetsMarts.
Giving chew bones / treats such as rawhide bones or real cow knucklebones also helps clean your dog's teeth and can help with the bad odor.

i know that smell! my dogs breath smells like it 2! its because the tarter and plaque build up on there teeth. you can move her lips back and see it because dogs don't brush their teeth like us they get build up (don't brush your teeth for a week and u'll see lol jk) but you can call around to some of your local groomers and ask if they do teeth scaling. and if so make an appoment and what they "teeth scaler" will do is remove all the stuff off of your dogs teeth and then you start brushing your dogs teeth. a tooth brush and tooth paste is available at any local pet store. p.s the vet do it to but they will put the dogs under and it cost way more! at a groomers they don't they wrap your doggie up in a towel wait till he/she is relaxed and then they start

They do make dog tooth paste, and also dog mints. I have seen both at petsmart. Some dogs naturally have bad breath. It also could be the sign of a dental problem.

Sounds to me your dog has dental problems. Best to make an appt at your Vets to have your dogs teeth cleaned. No denta bones, or brushing will get rid of the odour. Plaque builds up and can also cause gum disease

I would brush her teeth first. Check to see if there is anything in her mouth that could be causing it. Food stuck in there or a tooth gone bad. If there is take her to the vet. If not then brush her teeth see if it goes away, if not then it could be something more serious. Could be her stomach. She may have eaten something that didn't fare well with her. Then go see the vet. If the problem isn't in her mouth, it's in her stomach.

My neighbors have these breath fresheners for dogs. It won't hurt them and it tastes good to them! Also, you could just get a toothbrush and toothpaste. Try that and If it doesn't work, go to the vet and see if there is something wrong with the dog's mouth... that is what happened to one of my neighbor's dogs.

She could have dental problems. Buy a dog tooth brush and dog toothpaste, and brush her teeth weekly, at least. You could also take her to the vet and have her teeth scaled, they probably have plaque on them.
There are also some dog treats with mint in them, and that helps.

Start with the food. I Saggiest Purina One, or Royal Caine dry food. Royal Caine make its to the breed of dog that you have. But you can look into that. But using good food is a start.
Also take it to the vet. It may have and infection. That usually why they smell real bad.
