My Shih Tzu & Jack Russull both stay in the garage while I'm at work (15.5hrs, including travel - 3 days a wk.). I'm in Ohio and we're expecting very cold temperatures and I'm getting a little nervous for them.
I have bales of straw placed around their beds & cardboard under them. one has a pet taxi with blankets & one has a fleece bed in a cardboard box with blankets & I have a heavy comforter over, around, & covering the entrances to their little bungalows. The garage is attached, so one wall is adjoining the house.
Right now it is 25 outside and about 46 in the garage.
Before I get a lecture about not being a good pet owner, this is my only option as my husband left me in a rural town where I have no one to help me take the dogs out while I'm working. These dogs are my family.
So, do you think they're gonna be warm enough? I have a small radiant heater, but am afraid of burning down the house while I'm gone.

My wife found this puppy in our neighborhood the other day and we're curious if anyone has any ideas what breed(s) she may be.
She's about 18 pounds and I'm guessing she's anywhere from 2-4 months old.

My dog despirately wants to dig to hide her cookies indoors. She is way too small for this to be destructive, and never does any damage, but I want to figure out a mechanism for her to acceptably dig indoors so she can hide her treats and feel secure that no unscrupulous human will steal them. Basically, what I envision is a box with some diggable substance - I've tried paper but it gets EVERYWHERE and she doesn't seem to like the surface. I don't want to use dirt or cat litter for obvious reasons. I can't have her dig outside because I live in an apartment in Manhattan. It's not as if it's a destructive behavior I'm trying to fix, I really just want her to be happy, so I'm trying to invent something for her to use to hide her things. Does anyone have any ideas or have you constructed something similar? Any suggestions will be much appreciated (and fun to try!). So far her favorite place to try to dig is the sofa - which I do not permit - but I guess she likes soft things?

I've got a golden retriever, and generally he doesn't have any accidents when he's by himself. He can hold his bladder for hours at a time, like times when I'm at school. A lot of the time when I come home though, and I put his leash on to make him pee, he pees on the floor. As well as that, he also seems to pee when we touch him, but not as often. It's starting to become a real bother, and we're out of options. He's got no history or abuse, or at least none that we know of. We bought him from a breeder when he was 2 months old. Does anyone have a solution to my problem? What would it take to make him stop peeing on the floor?

we just got this 3yo yorkie sat. we are crate training her and she is doing really well on the pee part. on monday she pooped in her crate and i think it was running not sure because she walked in it ect (yea a big mess lol) anyway she has not pooped since then and this is thursday so it has been 3 days since she has pooped i know she only weighs 4 lbs but is this ok? i am sure when it happened mon it was because of being a new place and all but she has really taken to us now and is at home she plays and loves on us and wags her tail now. but she hardly eats anything just a few bites at a time (i figure thats all her stomach will hold) but i am worried about the poop thing and she was just at the vet before i got her because she was fixed so i hate to take her just for him to say its ok that little dogs sometimes dont poop that much... any thoughts or ideas???? should i be worried or not?

Ok well thank you for all that gave advice about me having to choose between two dogs. We met the basset mix today and fell in love :-) and the good news is the female beagle also got adopted from the shelter today by another family. Now I would like to know your guesses as to the second breed of the basset mix.

I adopted a second Siberian husky on Friday 1/26. He was neutered on 1/22 and I was told that he should be healed within 10 days and that no follow up was needed to take out the stitches. On 1/29 I took him to my own vet with fear that his wound had opened up and was getting infected. My vet said it was fine. He cleaned it really well and prescribed another weeks worth of antibiotics and painkillers. He also instructed me to clean it 2-3 times a day and apply Neosporin. Last night I noticed that the stitch has begun to come out (hanging out about a cm or so) and the incision it is still slightly bleeding on and off. The wound looks clean and does not appear to be infected -but does appear to be closing. Should I take him back to have it checked/sewn back up or wait it out a few more days? Is it normal for stitches to come out on their own? My dog does not seem to be bothered by any of this. This is my first male so I am concerned & unfamiliar. Thank you for serious answers.

I already know the answer but I want to see if anyone here does. Don't cheat and google it, just go by what you know - or think.

If a dog has a spotted tongue, does it mean it has Chow in the bloodline somewhere? Are Chows the only dog that can have a black or blue tongue?

a 5 year old girl had her face severely mauled by a family's black labrador? It didn't make national news of course, it was briefly reported in the 'Police Log' of my local paper. Should we all act hysterical now and ban all black labradors? Just curious. I've seen some pretty aggressive and intimidating black labradors myself. Pretty scary when they're running loose and approaching you barking/growling. I'd never want Labradors banned though. The bottomline is, the American Pit Bull Terrier is only ONE breed VS. thousands of other breeds that maul people every year, but you don't know it 'cause they're never reported in the news, just pit bulls are. Even if a pit bull 'slightly' bites someone, it would make national headlines over the black labrador that nearly ripped the girl's face off. Pretty biased. Yes, some pit bulls are aggressive, but so are my neighbor's Akitas whenever I walk down the street.

I know you dog people that don't let your dogs out of the house will flip out. But I want to hear the Answers.

What breed pound for pound is the best in a fight. Whether it be another dog. A cat , for those Toys and minitures. Or protecting its owner from a attacking bear or Mountain Lion. What breed is loyal enough to its owner to jeoperdize its own life?

My answer is the Yorkie. I don't own one.
The other thing is an attack on my dog is an attack on me. My dog already knows that. Hell I out weigh my dog by a 120lbs. I defrontly can inflick more damage. All I am saying is that I am not the owner that watches another dog male mine. Bear or Mountain Lion? Well he was a good dog. I hope I can find another as Loyal

I believe my Boxer has heartburn. I have Acid Reflux and I know the signs, which is why I think my dog has it. Do dogs get Heartburn? You can hear it when it happens to her and it seems to happen every day. She looks like she is burping up liquid as she makes a slight burping noise, then starts licking the inside of her mouth like crazy. Sometimes it makes her get up and move around, I can see her discomfort. What can help with this? Can dogs take Antacids? She already has a sensitive stomach and has to eat special food..

I have a 2 year old Female Chihuahua\Pomeranian mix who stands about 6 inches high and whieghs 6 pounds. She acts normal, except fo r the fact that she likes to... ummm.... hump things..... like...um .... people, like when I kneel down to pick thigs up she jumps up on my back and goes for my neck, or I'll be laying on the couch watching TV and she goes for my legs. She isnt spayed yet and has had 2 litters of puppies. So, you would think she would know how it works. My 3 year old female black lab dalmation also does the same thing except she is spayed and instead of people she does the couch AND my other dog who is a 2 year old female Pitt bull (who also humps just not as much as the other 2). This is very strange to me, even though sometimes people find it amuzing that my 3 female dogs hump. Even I somtimes find it very funny. I am fine with it as long as its normal. So, Is it normal or not?

My precious black lab of 10 years was recently put to sleep due to a herniated diaphragm. Her intestines had entered her chest cavity and wrapped around one lung making it difficult to breathe. I cannot think of any accident she ever had that could cause this injury. Someone told me that black labs are prone to weak diaphragms. Does anyone have experience with this?
