My precious black lab of 10 years was recently put to sleep due to a herniated diaphragm. Her intestines had entered her chest cavity and wrapped around one lung making it difficult to breathe. I cannot think of any accident she ever had that could cause this injury. Someone told me that black labs are prone to weak diaphragms. Does anyone have experience with this?

Thank you all for your kind words. I should have mentioned that she is half german pointer and half black lab and alittle overweight. However, it seems that this doesn't mean much with her condition.

Sorry for the loss of your dog.

As for your question the answer is no they are not prone in the least. Herniations can happen for a variety of reasons..past injury that weakened the wall, a weakness that exisited since birth that finally let go,cancer, etc.

In working at a vet surgery for 11 years I have NEVER heard of black labs or any breed having a weak diaphragm.

The only way the can get a diaphramatic hermia is by trauma.
This trauma may have occured years and years ago eg when a pup prior to you getting her, causing a weakness in the diagraphm. They do not spontaneously rupture.

Ive never heard of this happening as a tendency to labs, but I have seen it in several labs, as well as several other breeds. All had been either hit by a car, or had cancer in the diapraghm tissue that caused weakness, than a tear of the muscle.

In my lifelong experience with dogs, as well as my experience as working at an animal clinic, i can tell you i've honestly never heard of that being an issue with Labs.

I'd check with some AKC registered lab breeders to see what they say.

sorry about your baby <3

I am so sorry to hear about your Lab, that is so sad! I read that Labs can have that problem but I keep praying that my 2 black Lab puppies don't ever go through it. My deepest condolences to you!!
