there is a large misconception out there that size determines the best dog for an apt. This is mainly attributed to apt complex management that no dog over 20 lbs. A Min Pin is under 20 and is rated the 3rd worse dog for apts. Jack Russells and Rat Terriers also are not good apt dogs. There are several small breed dogs that will bark at noises ie: next door neighbor door knocking etc. This causes problems and complaints. Ironically one of the best for an apt is a Greyhound as it is quiet by nature and somewhat reserved when indoors. Not overly playful unless has an area to run. There is a book out there authored by a husband and wife veterinarian team. They did a 20 year study of this. You may check with your local library to see if they have it. Sorry, I do not remember the title but you will be surprised at which breeds actually do best in apts.

WELL WHAT TYPE OF APARTMENT IS IT? If its an apartment building you want a pet who is small and quiet (you don't want complaints) if you live on a high floor would it always be possible to run them down 5 flights of stairs to go potty? Probably not so you want a small enough dog who will go on a "wee wee" pad.... But if your talking apartment like a 2/3 family house go with a medium size. I have a wheaten terrier who will be about 40 pounds as adult. he is great, he doesn't bark unless extremely excited or when getting another dogs attention. he is very smart learned ot sit and give paw by a week and a half of having him. HE DOES NT SHED, which was a big concern to me since we rent. Their affection level is high but energy is medium,,,, so they are not hyper! it all depends where you live... many small dogs i.e. chihuahua seem to be barky, very vocal dogs. in my opinion that is not good for an apartment where you could get complaints! GOOD LUCK!

Just read up and get familiar with general training and curbing excessive barking. Some breeds regardless of size are predisposed and may need extra work. Size doesn't always dictate temperment. A small dog with a large attitude that barks at all foot traffic won't win you any friendly neighbours. Most dogs will get out of control and learn bad habits if the opportunities present themselves. Just be ready to train your dog regardless so reading up is always a good idea. I have a bichon/poodle mix. He needs minimal exercise (a good play session guarantees a nap) and minimal to almost no shedding.

Good luck!

Heyy,
Personally the best dog i would suggest is a Papillon! They aree ADORABLE, the same size as a chihuahua but less bug eyed - more collie like and fluffly. Though they can be hard to potty-train, they make wonderful companions, are generally quiet and a ton of fun. Willing to sleep next to you on the couch or run for hours (no joke). Plus, from a looks point, they are absoloutely beautiful. Another suggestion is a pomeranian, however theyare louder and far more hyper - but still very beautiful! Hope I helped,

If you are not well disciplined yourself and have a lot of time for training or caring for a pet in an apartment , then I would say none. But if you still insist on one. there are many breeds that would work. Toy breeds can be trained to go in cat boxes or stay in the bath room or crated when your not home. And of course being smaller means taking them out more often. if you don't wont a grooming bill, then think of short haired ones. all must be groomed. vaccinations, etc Check with your local animal Shelter

Chihuahuas are good apartment dogs since they are so small. They are good in those types of homes. They don't need much space or much excersise. I have a Chihuahua and they are very sweet dogs. Lots of people say they are mean and annoying, but really if you get a little puppy then introduce them to the home at a young age and they will be just fine.

Dachsunds are good too, but I don't know that much about them. They're just also small.

Any small or medium sized dog. Though I do recomend going to the pound to get him/her. That way they will give you a little back ground info. Just like.."She's very quiet." Then that would be a really good dog to have in an apartment. And it's also a way to give a dog a good home. Hope this helps.

I accept as true with the different poster. I had a Keeshond and whilst they're incredible dogs, mine substitute into one dogs I had that substitute into VERY vocal!! in addition they take a super form of grooming. they seem to be a calming breed with a lot of character and a super number of humorous quirks yet once you're searching for a quiet breed, it fairly isn't it. the different 2 you asked approximately, I have not have been given any adventure with so i can't supply an opinion. sturdy success despite you finally finally end up with.

A small, laid back dog. Not something too hyper, like a jack russell. Some yorkies can be extremely hyper. Check out puppyfind.com or akc.org to find out the temperment of certain dogs. Apartments don't have much room, so probably something small with not too much energy.
