Cats - January 2007

i have had my cat since he was 8 weeks old.
he is now nearly 2 years old.

he has been brought up indoors as i live in a block of flats and untill recently all the neighbours had dogs.

even tho he has had the snip, my cat can be vicious so when he was six months old i started walking him on a lead to get him used to being outside as the vet suggested letting him out as maybe it would help calm him down.

since last week i decided to take him out without his lead. he didnt run off to explore like i thought he would he just ran straight to the front door of the block and meowed ever so loudly untill i let him back in.

its a safe area where i took him near the flats and its quite as its away from the road.

he always runs straight back to the block.
if i dont let him in he meows untill someone lets him in.

i really want him to go out as he is over weight and needs the exersize. what can i do?

Yes, I know... Neutering would be the obvious answer, and I would if I could, but it is out of the question right now... Even PETA is more than we can afford right now. January is a bad month economically for us, and everyone usually. :-( The only thing I could think of is put him outside. We have a fenced in back-yard (which probably wouldn't stop a cat.. but lets hope) I put a cage out there for him to sleep in lined with towels, and a heating pad... but I feel horrible about it. I really don't mean to be cruel, but I don't know what else to do. My house has smelled strongly of cat urine for several days, I can't go to work with my clothes smelling like that! Any ideas?

*My vet is on vaca until Fri -in the meantime, I want to know if anyone has any experience/knowledge with this type of scenario?*

My family cat, Dallas, is about 9 & lives with my Dad. He used to be the coolest cat. In Aug, 2 new cats were introduced to the house & he has NOT taken to them. (At first he urinated EVERYWHERE).

He has his own litterbox, food dishes/area and even his own bedding space (all of these the other cats can't get to-they have their own) he's still not right. He flips out RANDOMLY, almost like an anxiety attack, yowling & hissing & other times he's sullen. He also basically just sits around all day.
I miss my cat dearly & don't want him to live a life like that. I am bringing him to my place to live, which is about 350 mi away.
My questions:

-Will he survive the trip? I'm afraid he will have an anxiety/heartattack!

-Will he go back to the way he was?

-Is he too old to adjust to a new place?

Thanks in advance!

because they are starving. I would like to feed them, but I know that will just bring more of them coming back all the time for food. Is there an organization that takes away stray animals and takes care of them so they can be adopted?

I found my cat, Marlo this morning and we think he had been hit by a car, it turns out that 2 of his toes have been broken and he has a dislocated hip. Tommorrow morning he is having surgery and we are extremly worried (excision arthroplasty). Has anyone else had this happen to their cat - what is the best way to look after him once he gets home? His other leg also has a large cut about 5 cm long which has to be bandaged and stitched, so he is not going to be able to use it. I'm worried about how he is going to be able to get around and use his litter tray. i'm also woried about how his hip and movement is going to be once he has recovered. please any info is greatly appreciated, two very worried parents here.

He lives outside, so he has been in fights with toms in the neighborhood. They come up on our porch, and he tries to run them off. Well, he he is going on 10 years, so he rarely "wins" the fight, so he gets scratches and cuts, of course, but I've recently noticed his fur is matting. I've tried to brush them out, but it didn't seem to work. I can't take him to a groomer, and I don't know how else to fix it.

I adopted my cat about 2 months ago. He doesn't smell or have fleas or anything yucky like that, so is it even necessary for me to give him a bath? I was told that cats are self-sufficient in the cleaning department. lol. Plus, I hear it's a nightmare trying to give them a bath.

I get a daily dose of silliness from mine. She's had a lot of trouble with the glass table and fell off a few times! and when she comes down the stairs, it sounds like an elephant has just moved in. We love her to bits.

rid of her. I don't want her in my house (I'm allergic) but I feel sorry for her living outside. It's really cold now and now I think she's pregnant. I would hate for her to deliver her kittens outside. Does anyone know of any animal shelters in New York City that would take her in, spay her (if it's not too late) and put her up for adoption?

Shes 2 years old, we've had her for almost a year and ever sense we got her she's been throwing up!! We took her to the vet like 6 months ago and it cost us $600 for them to tell us she has some stomach thing and we had to give her medicine. it worked for a little while but then she started throwing up maybe once a week... then it was a couple times a week... and now its almost everyday. And its not because shes eating too fast or too much. She doesnt puke right after she eats either... she pukes in the middle of the day. Theres no whole food in there it looks like shes chewing it all up and shes not losing any weight. Does anyone else have this problem? And does anyone know how I can help her?? I really cant afford another trip to the vet. Im struggling enough as it is.

Seriously, he is my little love muffin and I can't stand to think Tito would be in a worse place. If I can't give him love for a couple of years then I'd love to give him an eternity of peace and warmth.

I'm in the process of persuading my parents to get me a kitten. I'd like to have a little insight on which breed would be the best one to buy just in case they agree. I want a kitten that doesn't shed a lot, can stay inside the house, able to groom itself, cute, and something that strict parents would approve of. Thanks! Please attach a website if you know of one for kitten care, the breeds, and other stuff like that.

I have my own cat, which is strictly indoor. But I've grown fond of a number of cats around our block that have a wide range of personalities and behaviors.
Two of them -- a long haired Maine Coon with an orange saddle and a mostly white Tuxedo cat -- have taken to beating each other up on a near daily basis. This mostly happens near my study in the early afternoon. I have no idea who the owners are and would really like to bring an end to this ongoing battle.
Any suggestions?

This has been bothering me for quite some time now. My live in bf of less than a year gives his cat more attention than he gives me. He sweet talks his cat, hugs the cat when he sleeps and says that his cat (his first pet) is considered like a son. He then tells me that he loves me more than anything in the world. I love him to death, and we're very happy together except for this little situation. It just kills me to see that the cat gets more "pampering" than I do. Its the cats house, and the cats bed that we live in. Everything is the cat's. He stares adoringly and has moments with the cat. I just feel like i'm just an outsider that he talks too. Anyone go through this? Should I be feeling like this? Should I reconsider our relationship because of this? What should I do?

My room's not the neatest thing in the world, but it's cleaner than any of my friends rooms. I do my chores to a certain extent, but it takes some nagging. I want to get a kitten and I know that I first have to show my parents that I'm responsible enough to take care of my own pet. However, my parents are a bit strict and hard to persuade. So anyone got any ideas on how I can get them to buy me a kitten and show them that I'm responsible enough?

This weekend, my husband and I went to our local SPCA. In the cat room, I noticed an obviously sick cat with thick green mucus coming from her nose. I told the kennel attendant who responded, "Oh yeah, she has an upper respiratory infection, but can't be out into quarantine for another two days."

I came to find out that the cat had already been sitting there for 5 days and must stay out in the general area for 2 more days because she was picked up as a stray and they want her to be seen if her family comes looking.

But, aren't upper respiratory infections contagious? By leaving her in the general cat population that included newborn kittens, wouldn't the SPCA be putting them at risk? Do you know of any shelters that have similar practices or any that differ? Personally, I believe there should be a better way to care for sick animals while still allowing them the chance to be found by their owners!
