Because cats are nocturnal. They like to sleep during the day and at night they play and eat and generally are more active.

in the experience that your cat is neutered it isn't mating calls a minimum of no longer from her (if no longer get her executed asap till you've truly good residences for any kittens she would have) it is probably right down to territorial calls. Caterwauling - that crying infant sound is mostly a queen calling a tom for mating or a dispute over who owns what area. If there are not the different cats round it would purely be a fox or hedgehog yet I doubt it.

My cats make a lot of noise at night when we're asleep. It worried me for awhile but it turned out that they're just playing. If there's a female cat in the area who is "in season" they could be responding to that as well.

If you have a big problem with stray cats you should probably get in touch with animal control... especially if they're around your kids. Stray animals can carry all kinds of unsavory guests (i.e. fleas and ticks) and even illnesses.

That "child cry" noise is coming from the female cats in heat and the males responding to them... The only way to stop this is to safe-trap the cats and get them all fixed. Call your local Animal Control office or rescue groups around to see if they have a trap-and-release program in your area.

The cats are probably lonely or doing a mating call because they are in heat. I know cats make loud screeching sounds when they are in heat...maybe the cats are sad. I know my cat sleeps with us every night and it is very comforting for us and kitty.
