Yes, I know... Neutering would be the obvious answer, and I would if I could, but it is out of the question right now... Even PETA is more than we can afford right now. January is a bad month economically for us, and everyone usually. :-( The only thing I could think of is put him outside. We have a fenced in back-yard (which probably wouldn't stop a cat.. but lets hope) I put a cage out there for him to sleep in lined with towels, and a heating pad... but I feel horrible about it. I really don't mean to be cruel, but I don't know what else to do. My house has smelled strongly of cat urine for several days, I can't go to work with my clothes smelling like that! Any ideas?

Neutering is your only option. I sympathize about the finances. It can be expensive to neuter. Call around to other shelters, rescues and vets. Someone else may have a very inexpensive or free program. I manage a no-kill shelter, and we are always working to get grants to offer free or very low cost spays and neuters. Good luck.

Yeah put it outside to harass the neighbours and or the wildlife..,.. aren't you a responsible person. Why get an animal at all if you cant afford to look after it and worse still not have it neutered. You got the cat- its your responsibility, if you cant mange it then get rid of it.
Yes this sounds hard but I have had the personal experience of having a neighbour do exactly what you are proposing for exactly the same reasons and they never got their cat neutered, they never took it back inside, and meanwhile it came shitting in my garden, spraying around my house, killed my pet rabbits and the neighbours goldfish along with their finches not to mention the the guy over the back who saw it trying to get at his chickens. Cats don't respect fences so either keep it inside and deal with the problem or if you do put it outside- build one of those cat enclosures and keep it in their.

Hi there...unfortunately, neutering is the only way to control male cats hormones which are instinctual which is why they are marking territory. The longer a cat continues to spray urine the more it becomes habitual and more difficult to stop even after a neuter. The problem by putting an unneutered male cat outdoors it poses the risk of him roaming impregnated other cats, getting into to territorial fights and contracting feline aids (FIV), feline leukemia and other feline diseases from other unvaccinated infected cats which most feline diseases are incurable, some medically manageable yet expensive.
Nearly all animal shelters in the world offer low fee neuter (e.g. $25) or even for free to qualifying recipients. In the USA you can ring 1-800 SPAY USA http://spayusa.org to locate a nearby participating shelter and here's another list of shelters that offer low fee/free spay/neuters: http://www.petsandanimals.org/spayneuter_services.html
To clean the urine odours consider Nature's Miracle Just For Cats found worldwide at most pet stores. It's an enzymatic neutralizer which works by breaking down urine proteins by thoroughly soaking the areas affected and allowing to air dry. Repeated applications are necessary for heavily soiled areas.

We've tested nearly all enzyme neutralizers available in the marketplace for our exotic cats which have stronger urine than domestic cats and found that Nature's Miracle Just for Cats has always worked the best.

neuter him, and realize that many vet's will let you have a charge account with them, so you can make monthly payments.
get a spray bottle and fill it 1/2 white vinegar and the other 1/2 with warm water, spray the affected area and let soak approx. 5 minutes, use paper towel and absorb up the excess wetness.
god bless you.

Once they start spraying, neutering may not stop that. My sister's cat got neutered after he started spraying and he still does it. He's now an outside cat. Why don't you sit down with your tomcat and explain to him that cat piss is considered unpleasant to humans and that you're going to have his nads clipped and keep him outside if he continues. Most tomcats are very reasonable and will find that not pissing inside is a good tradeoff for keeping nads.
OR
Why not donate blood and use that money for neutering? Two problems solved!

Try ceyanne pepper.(spelling) sprinkle it around your house except for the cat box, we have a male cat that did that for a while so i understand what your going through, but he didnt really stop until we got him fixed, which i know is a problem, but if you let him outside and he isnt fixed that means cat fights...but try the pepper (sorry i forgot how to spell it) or if that doesnt work , there is this carpet sprinkle stuff you can buy at pets mart that sometimes works for male cats, i forgot the name of that to lol sorry , but you can ask someone at pets mart for it. Good luck

If you put him outside..he will roam to find a female cat and have kittens. Bad idea. I suggest calling a vet and asking about payment options.

Do you live in a private house? Maybe keep him in the basement. Try calling the aspca or aniaml clinic in your area and explain your situation. I would hope someone would be willing to help you out.

Like someone said before... make a diaper... this will stop him from doing this and some pet stores sell diapers for puppies in heat... they probably have them small enough for your cat....
