i have had my cat since he was 8 weeks old.
he is now nearly 2 years old.

he has been brought up indoors as i live in a block of flats and untill recently all the neighbours had dogs.

even tho he has had the snip, my cat can be vicious so when he was six months old i started walking him on a lead to get him used to being outside as the vet suggested letting him out as maybe it would help calm him down.

since last week i decided to take him out without his lead. he didnt run off to explore like i thought he would he just ran straight to the front door of the block and meowed ever so loudly untill i let him back in.

its a safe area where i took him near the flats and its quite as its away from the road.

he always runs straight back to the block.
if i dont let him in he meows untill someone lets him in.

i really want him to go out as he is over weight and needs the exersize. what can i do?

I'm not quite sure the area where you live is very safe for a cat.
Your cat has gotten used to being on the lead and without it, he feels unsafe. Cats are very cautious and it can take them quite a while for them to adapt to a new situation. When we moved our cat would go out but she would stay very, very close to the house. As time went on she got more daring.
You can buy toys for your cat that will give him the exercise he needs without having to let him out. Going out doesn't mean exercising. He could well go out, find a nice spot and sleep for a few hours. If you want to make sure he exercises, you'll have to play with him!

Put him out at times when you are around so that he can see you. Try feeding him outside. Don't force him - bring him out for short times to begin with & if he gets really frightened, then don't persist - bring him back in & try again later. Just be patient - it may take time for him to get more confident. Reward him when he is outside & give him lots of reassurance. He may never really like being outside, so don't force him. As for exercise - get some interactive toys & encourage him to play with you.

Play with him insteasd. Don't force him to go out. He will get run over one day... especially if he is such a frightened cat and does not know the street live.
