Cats - October 2006

A few years back my parents got a kitten that seemed to be healthy.

Well one day there was this spot on it's back that seemed raw and it was oozing pus or something.

Every day it seemed to get bigger and bigger until all of the cat's back had no fur on it, just this raw, oozy spot.

I live out of state and had no idea that they even had a cat, but I went home to visit and saw this poor thing like that and threatened to call animal control if they did not bring the cat to the vet.

The next day when I went over, the cat was gone. I asked what happened to it and they said they dropped it off at the humane society, but I honestly believe the either dropped the cat off somewhere else to die or shot it. I'll never know. :( He was a gorgeous cat and I would have taken him if I'd only known sooner.

Anyway, I was just sitting here thinking about the poor thing and wondering if anyone had any idea of what could have been wrong with it?

I work at a local veterinary Hospital that takes referrals. We got one that was a beautiful but very sick siamese female, ten years old. I didn't get to meet the owners before they dropped the kitty off, and usually if an animal is as ill as this kitty I prefer to speak with the owner.

Anyway, they left 3 contact numbers and said if anything happpened to the cat they would just die. Based on this we took some blood work. It's end stage kidney failure. The kitty looks like a skeleton and is dehydrated. It's vomiting blood from the renal toxins. It's going to die, but I started it on the basics until I could talk with the owners.

Well, All the contact numbers are out of service. They abandoned the cat at My hospital 3 days ago. By law around here, Abandonment is 10 days!

Maybe someone can explain what they were thinking? All they had to do was be honest and mature...I guess I'm asking too much but I don't get it...

Sad situation for the kitty.

My cat all of a sudden is peeing and pooping in the basement corners. Her litter box is out in the garage and she has access to it and it has been in the same place for a long time. We recently just got two kitties and their cage is out in the garage to, kind of near her litter box. Is she jealous and just doesnt want to go near the kitties, or does she have something wrong with her. And why doesnt she except the kitties. Why does she always hit them, she has been a mother before so why doesnt she act like a mother to them?

My kitten is almost a year old and I want him to start eating wet food (fancy feast, friskies, etc). He eats dry kitten food, but if I put some wet food in a bowl he smells it and never eats it. How can I teach him to start eating wet food?

I just discovered a lump on my cat's back, right next to the spine, it's about as as big around as a golf ball, not as thick though. It's pretty hard. My husband said it's probably just a calcium deposit, his family dog used to get them all the time. What should I do? My cat is only 4 years old!

I live in southern CA and my apt has lots of fruit flies. There seems to be nothing I can do about it. My kitty loves to play with them but I just saw him actually eat one! I'm afraid this will cause tapeworm. He had it once before and the vet said it was caused by eating a flea.

Could the same thing happen from eating fruit flies or other bugs?

I've had a female cat for a little over 3 years. Everything was fine until about 4 months ago. Now everytime she is about to go into heat she decides I am some unknown enemy. If I get anywhere near her, she hisses and growls. My children and husband have no such problems with her, it seems to be just me. Now it is starting to happen more frequently. Is it hormones, or is she losing her mind? Any help would be appreciated.

My cat is really lovable sometimes, but othertimes, she will get really vicious and claw the crap out of me and leave scars, and I don't want to get rid of her.

I have been looking after him for the last week and a half and my aunt will be back from holiday in 3 days time. I had a vindaloo curry last night and fed the cat the leftovers. He has had the runs all day. I tried to clean his rear end up but smeared it all over his back end. So I then tried trimming back the affected fur and to cut a long story short I ended up shaving off the matted up fur. He now looks like a badly trimmed poodle. My aunty loves sampson to bits and treats him like the child she never had. What should I do?? Any advice on this problem will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

This is the best cat. She is lovable and has a very calm personality. She has been checked by a vet and is very healthy for being 8 years old. She is fixed and declawed.
Recently, she has taken to urinating on laundry. She only does it on laundry and will now do it every chance she gets. It is mostly laundry left in a laundry basket or in a pile on the floor. It doesn't matter if it is clean or dirty clothes or who it belongs to. We have tried everything under the sun to stop this behavior but nothing has worked. Is there any reason that she would be doing this after the previous 7 years with no problems? I would hate to give up this cat but I can't have her urinating on my clothes. Cat urine stinks god awful in case you have never had the pleasure to take a big wiff.
Please help!
