Not normal, but I don't think it'll kill them. Some animals in Africa eat mud to get minerals from the dirt not contained in their diet. But I don't know if regular cats do this.
Cats are independent, let them do what they want to do, I'm sue they'll be fine or learn the hard way.

sometimes cats devolop strange habits when domesticated. this is probably a sign of a vitamin deficiency in its diet. (people get these too, like craving paper is a sign of animia).
make sure your cat has a good dry cat food. one suited to its age, like kitten or senior formula. (iams is the best, it's expensive, but since it has more nutrients, cats eat less of it, and it ends up costing about the same). also give your cat a tablespoon of wet cat food twice a day. this provides nutrients a cat can't get out of dry food. make sure your cat has access to fresh water at all times, it may be a dehydration thing.
treat eating mud like any other unwanted behavior, spray your cat with water, or make a loud noise when you see it happneing.
as a last resort, mention it to the vet next time you go, he may be able to identify other problems.

animals eating something other than cat food or their respective seafood dishes, etc can be normal, but you shouldnt allow your cat to eat the mud, it is going to screw up it's immune system. I would say take it in for a checkup or call your local vet and ask them what they think that may be a sign of.

Manny animals and even humans eat mud or dirt. It has to do with nutrient deficiency. It is harmless. Take the cat to the vet and have blood work done to see what it is laking. Could be iron, copper , magnesium..who knows. But God made dirt and dirt wont hurt...dont worry to much...

Better than a dog that eats poop...maybe there's something in the mud she finds tasty - like an insect or a worm.

yes,
but it isnt very commen. there might be something in the mud like some sort of nutrients that your cat's body needs. or else it could be mixed in with something else that it is attracted to. as long as your lil bundle of joy is still eatting its cat food then there isnt to much to worry about.
