Hi there again Genny...many people have suggested scratching posts and this is definitely a good start. Be sure to rub catnip on the scratching posts to encourage interest there. Additionally, consider learning to trim the very tips your kitty's nails which blunts the ends leaving less damage to the furniture. A vet or a groomer can teach you and your mother you so there's no accidental cutting of the small red vein (called a quick) that's in the nail which would be bleed. Here's also a step-by-step video on how to trim a cat's nails by Cornell Univerisity College of Veterinary Medicine: http://www.felinevideos.vet.cornell.edu/trimming_claws/ and a website with photos and a detailed description on how to do this as well: http://www.catscratching.com/htmls/article.htm

First buy a scratching post (or make one from scratch ... I'm sure there are websites you can find with ideas for this). If that doesn't work (which often it doesn't), try either clipping his nails or putting on the nail caps (you can find them at PetSmart, and probably most other pet stores). I wouldn't recommend declawing him, because it is a painful proceedure - and if the cat ever gets outside, or if you adopt him to someone else and they don't want it to be an inside cat or they want it inside only sometimes, he won't have any protection.

You can also try behavioral training, e.g. squirting him or giving him a light slap or shouting/clapping when he scratches the furniture if none of the above options appeals to you.

First start off with getting a furry scratching post with a sturdy base. Right away take your cats paws and rake the claws on the scratching post so he will realize it's a safe spot to scratch and mark his territory. Do this a few times every day and keep squirting him when he scratches where he isn't supposed to and after a few weeks he should get the hang of it.

Offer it a lot of scratching posts. It won't leave the furniture alone completely, but it won't go there as often. That's what we've done. Declawing is cruel and the pain lasts for months. You can't stop a cat from being a cat, and why would you want to? IT'S A CAT.

Here are some options I know of: declaw your kitty (don't choose this option w/o trying other methods. Also don't choose this is your kitty goes outside), buy nail caps to glue to your cat's nails, buy your cat a scratching post, get on to her when she scratches on something other than her post, use a squirt bottle to stop her (don't let her see you squirt her though. She will learn to be scared of you, not the squirting).

We put these Soft Paws things on ours...they are like lee press on nails for cats. They have safe glue and they come in all colors. We got black to match our cat. He can't get a grip on our furniture any more...it is great. He was annoyed at first and he tries to bite them off, but they he cant. They grow off naturally as the nail grows. Very cool.

dont declaw the cat because i heard it hurts alot. maybe get a little squirt bottle and just spritz him when he does it and say,"BAD KITTY" not really yelling though.or you could get him a scratching post. GOOD LUCK!!!
