With some kitties, less is more. IT's probably his personality, but how about instead of swiping him up from the ground, just sneak in a few pets and gentle pats now and then.
Give him a treat and then pet him while he eats it (if he lets you.). In time, your cat will start to crave attention, but only if you start in small quantities.
Trust me, I have a cat who was just like that and this method works wonders.
But if he's resistant of if you want some holistic help, try "FELIWAY" by VPL. This actually releases relaxing phermones into the air and can mellow a cranky cat. Good luck!

My oldest cat didn't become a lap cat until he was past 10... it might just be awhile before he wants that kind of attention. Cats are very individual. The fact that he sleeps next to you means he likes your company and attention, but right now he just doesn't want to be held.

My cat hates being held or picked up as well. He loves to lie next to me, wherever I am sitting or lying. But he gets so mad when I pick him up. There's really nothing that you can do. They either like it or they don't. You can't change their minds. I know, I've tried. Stop trying to pick him up and just let him do his own thing. He might decide he wants more attention if you ignore him a little bit.

My cat is the same way, she comes to you when she wants attention, ie, petting, and she may lie down by my feet at night time, but as for me holding her theres no way. I swear she was traumatized when she was a kitten she used to let me hold her but on her first visit to the vet she has her ears cleaned due to having ear mites and ever since than she doesnt want to be held. Dont worry about it, your cat is showing you love when he comes to be petted or just by lying by you at night. Thats his way.

each cat has a destinct personality, some just don't want to be held, like people, some just want some space. If you try to change your pet, it could resent you for it and avoid you more.....so, just respect it, he loves ya, he just has a hard time showing it! :D

It's just his personality. You shouldn't really force it on him, maybe just ease a hug. Or maybe you're just hugging too tightly.

leave him alone for a bit, start by justing lightly petting him for a few months, then if he starts trusting you more then start hugging him.
