Last Sunday I bought a 6 month old male Cockatiel. I took him to the vet and he got a clear bill of health, but he hasn't really been eating since I got him. I got him to eat some a few minutes ago but I had to take out all of the larger pellets and sunflower seeds out. So maybe the guy before, whose pet store has no phone for some reason, fed him parakeet food? And I also noticed that his droppings are sort of off-white, almost yellow instead of white. My first question is, is it healthy for a Cockatiel to eat Parakeet food? And is there something else wrong with him that could explain why his droppings arn't white?

I read online it was bad for them but it seems odd that they can't.Is this missinformation or is it true?

I tried to put a bowl of water in their cage but they didn't use it. Should I just spray them down? And how often should they have a bath?

Any other suggestions? I have a large aviary with 8 parakeets and some newly hatched babies and everyone's beaks are getting long. I'm afraid eventually they won't be able to eat. Catching them all and taking them to the nearest pet store (about an hour round trip-plus trim time) when they are caring for their babies seems mean and dangerous for the babies.

Do male birds have male parts up inside their bodies which are not noticeable until during mating?

I understand adding to water is not a great idea?? Apparently disintegrates fast and promotes bacteria growth. how should i give it to them? they are taking seed diet and lots of coriander and wheat grass. have tried veges and fruits but they keep rejecting them.

My cockatiels have started mating.I have a nesting box in the cage also. My male is usually sweet and friendly, but since they started that, They both bite at me when I put my hand in the cage to pet them.

We recently got a baby Cinnamon mutation Green Cheek Conure. She (dna'd) can be very sweet, and loves head rubs. But when you put your hands in her cage she screeches like she thinks she is a bird of prey (thats what it reminds me of anyhow). Is it cuz she is a baby (hatched on 11/21/06) or do they always act like this? I am hoping she (Mecca) will grow out of it with age. And they have some very sharp beaks so we get startled and pull our hands away. The avaiary we got her from said that she was well socialized, yet when she first perched on us there she was all nippy and stuff. So I am not sure how much socialization they did with her. I know avairies are very busy with all the hand feeding, so I am a bit disapointed that she is not more tame. We drove four hours to get her, and we can barely handle her. Any green cheek owners have the same problem, and how did you over come it??
Thanks a lot

I have had these two for four months. The lighter banded keet acts more like a female, bites harder - cautious - harder to train - all brown cree, while the slightly bigger banded keet acts more like a male, wants to eat out of my hand first - curious - very playful - brownish cree surrounded by a pinkish color. Please see my pics:

I put in a nesting box for my two parakeets, my female keeps eating off her cuttlebone, and is losing feathers. She also spends alot of time at the bottom of the cage. I don't know much of what goes on because they are more active at night now.

The bird will sometimes let us take it out of cage and we practice "stepping up" on each finger, but usually after 3-4 minutes she flutters to the floor (her wings are clipped). Other times she refuses to come out of her cage. She'll sing to the other birds outside. We also leave a radio on for her during the day so it is not too quiet. I've read and have been told that a diet of seed alone is bad so we have been giving her fruits and veggies but she never really seems to be eating them. The cage is clean and there are a couple toys but it isn't cluttered. Am I being impatient? Will she socialize to us more or is this the extent? Should I be worried about her diet?

I was told that I could oput a parakeet in with a love bird. I would like to know if that's true... We have put their cages next to eachother and they seem to like eachother but I am afraid to put them in together... I would like to know if they can be put in the same cage together.... I was told they could be but I don't want to do anything that's going to harm either bird... Thank you

2 years ago I took in a male DB Yellow Head Amazon who was neurotic and had been kept, as I was told, for 7 years in his 2'x2'x3' cage (1 sm. perch, a squeeky baby toy and a chew toy) with little human contact and the method the person took to get him back to the cage was to chase him with a stick or perch. I knew he was going to need time but I didn't know how nasty he was. He attacks me when I clean the cage, when I give him food/water and he flies at us when he is out of his cage to attack. With time he moved into a larger cage with more toys and then he moved himself into my other DB.Y.H.'s cage which is ruffly 5'x4'x2' a few months ago. He is no longer neurotic but he is still nasty. I have gave him time, treats,I allways talk to him, and I have resorted to wraping my hand and arm in thick material he cant bite threw to show him I am not going to back away when he attacks. I have read many topics on this all which say give time but does anyone have a idea that may calm him down?

they are not runny or messy and don't contain any parasites,
He seems to be not to bad in himself,he's still eating and drinking and playing with the other bird,
I have noticed he is sleeping alot more,so this has set alarm bells ringing
He is three years of age and i have never had any health probs with him before,
I don't have a vet in my area that deals with birds and the last time i took one of my other birds along to the general vets i think the upset and shock killed him
Can birds get better on their own if left alone ?

I have two pet dove, a white dove and a ringneck dove, they have been excreting a runny dropping, but they dont look like they are sick, they are very active, eat and drink normally, make their "cooing" sound, and is aware. They have normal eyes, nose, etc. All normal except the dropping, it looks like a normal dropping but only it is wet, as if it is drinking alot?

Please help, is this a problem, if yes what are the possible cause of runny dropping.

They are 4 weeks old now and still in the nesting box. I plan to hand feed them soon. We only have the parents and the 3 babies. When they are ready to eat on their own can I put them back in the parents cage?

I noticed that the oldest baby's crop looked empty since a few days ago. Yesterday I tried putting it in a home made brooder. I tried to feed it Exact Kaytee, but it didn't want to eat. I followed instructions very carefully, so I'm sure the mixture was prepared properly. The food was about 104F when I started, but as it was a cold day it cooled down very fast. I don't think the hand feeding was a problem. What is wrong with it? Another reason why I took it out of the nesting box was that it feel out or was pushed out. The other two babies always have full crops. When the oldest one sits near the nesting box's opening the parents will just pass it and feed the other two. What can I do? Will it get sick or die if it doesn't get fed properly? When I put it back I noticed a piece of green vegetable on its beek. So mommy did feed, but not enough. This baby also flaps its wings inside the nesting box. If I can't feed it what will happen?
