I tried to put a bowl of water in their cage but they didn't use it. Should I just spray them down? And how often should they have a bath?

Just get some sort of spray bottle. I use a hair water spray bottle. You can find them in the travel isle at Wal-mart for $1 or less.

What you do is just put luke warm water in it (make sure it isn't too hot for your bird) and spray your bird. You do not have to get your bird too wet. This just causes your bird to preen themselves and naturally clean themselves.

My parakeet does not like the dish either. I still put one in every now in then but he never does anything with it.

My lovebird loves water. He uses dishes. With him I also put him in the sink and let the water run at a safe temperature and he plays under the running water and drinks it. Just make sure the pressure is not too high and that the water is not too hot.

I give my bird a bath about every other week. Sometimes my lovebird helps himself in his waterdish to a bath when he pleases.

When giving your bird a bath give it to him early in the day because at night he can become chilled. I have read the a blow dryer used a the lowest setting can be used to dry off your bird.

To dry off my lovebird when he uses the sink I usually hold him in a wash cloth and and snuggles into me and falls asleep. It is almost like a bonding time.

Another thing you can try is the attachment baths that hook onto the cage. The enclosed area may make him feel safe You also said that you use a bowl. That may be too deep for the bird and scare him. You should try a saucer. That is what the books I have suggest.

I also tell my birds how pretty they are when they are done with their bath to give them praise and make the baths seem enjoyable. Using a spray bottle seems like it will be your best bet.

You can spray them with a plant moisturizer bottle, make sure it has no plant vitamin or such in it at all. My parakeet did not know how to use the bowl so we had to teach him to :)
It is quite simple actually: Get a bowl with a diameter of about 15-20cm and not too deep(when in it the bird should be less than half wet) get your parakeet to sit on your finger and closely attach him to the side of the bowl. This may sound a little mean but it does not hurt your birdie a bit : when he sits on the side of the bowl give him a little push into the bowl by raising his tail with a finger(don't hold the tail this is just kind of lifting it up) until he slips and falls into the bowl. At first he may be a little scared but then he will fly back and use it happily ever after ;) hope that helps

Some budgies love baths, and others do not care for it.

Just keep setting the bowl of water in the cage. You neen to make sure the water is no deeper than 1 inch.

They also make bird baths that attach to the cage door.

When it's hot or they just need to be cleaned, get a spray bottle, fill it up with water, put the nozzle on mist, stand back about 3 to 4 ft and spray once or twice. It is safer than dunking your bird in a bucket of water and they will enjoy it more.

You can spray them with a spray bottle, or give them a birdie bathtub for their house or even take showers with them. I take showers with mommy and daddy then they put a hairdryer on cool and make sure im dry and warm. I also have a birdie bath with a mirror in it in my house so fun!

You might want to try using one of those plant misters. I had a cherry headed conur and several cockatiels. i would let the water run in the sink and they would crawl down my hand to splash around in the running water. Usually i let them do this about once a week maybe a bit longer . This is personal experience.

a bowl of water will not do the trick. You need to have a sprayer. They will love that. Good luck.
