The bird will sometimes let us take it out of cage and we practice "stepping up" on each finger, but usually after 3-4 minutes she flutters to the floor (her wings are clipped). Other times she refuses to come out of her cage. She'll sing to the other birds outside. We also leave a radio on for her during the day so it is not too quiet. I've read and have been told that a diet of seed alone is bad so we have been giving her fruits and veggies but she never really seems to be eating them. The cage is clean and there are a couple toys but it isn't cluttered. Am I being impatient? Will she socialize to us more or is this the extent? Should I be worried about her diet?

I have two Parakeets & a Sun Conure.
My two parakeets were never played with much as babies and they are only 1 yr old now but, we dont get them out of the cage for playtime with us. We just Open the door and they climb around their cage and fly to various places in the house to get exercise and then go right back to their cage.
My Sun Conure on the Other hand is ALWAYS out with me. He sleeps with me, eats with me, and takes showers with me.

A seed only diet is VERY bad for birds so, like one other said eating something and acting like it is YUMMY! always gets their attention. I feed mine Zupreem Pellets although I favor Roudybush, A variety of Seed, Fruits, Veggies, Beans, & Pastas. You can go to the store and get just a bag of beans that has all kinds of different ones in there and cook them, and give them to your birdie.

Another thing is we have a HUGE cage for our two Parakeets, its actually a Keet Aviary. Im not sure of what toys you have but, Birds get tired of the same old toys so buying new ones and rotating them is a Great way to keep them happy, entertained, and not so bored.
Keep up with the step-up command, and Im sure he is jumping off your hand because he is bored. Try going to your local pet store or even walmart they have that cheap little Bird Play Gym and get him that to sit around on, to spend some time out with you. You may be able to persuade him to eat some fresh foods on there. :)
Good Luck!!

Yes, you are being impatient. Budgies don't like to try new things, so just keep putting fruits and veggies in her cage and she'll eventually try something and find out that she likes it. Don't be too worried about her diet- try giving her seed mixed with pellets if she won't try fruits and veggies. If you've only had her for a week and a half, she's probably still trying to adjust. She may be getting frustrated when you're practicing step-up, so just put her back into her cage and try again later. Your bird is just fine.

I used to have parakeets before and although it may sound a bit irregular I used to have a perch inside the house where whenever I was home I would have them out of the cage......I usually never kept them in the cage unless I had visitors or kids came over. I also would dedicate at least 1 hour to play or hang out with them!!

I think it may be lonely but if you don't think is not eating you should see a vet because it could be a few things going on!!

I hope he/she is okay and maybe while you are home you can play it will help with the socializing......exercising is not all you should play other games they are very smart and you can also play with new sounds eventually they pick it up depending on their species!!

it just takes time, my budgie always used to fly on the floor on accident, but in time they eventually learn. to gain your budgies trust try putting some seed in between your fingers and offer it to her, or put a drop of water on your finger to see if she'll take it. you should try maybe finding some vitamans at a bird store, or a pet store, or maybe try to find a seed that has a more variety of seeds mixed in

relax.... birds can be temperamental... and they get bored easily.. and she's not eating fruits and veggies because she probably doesn't know what they are or what they taste like.. try eating near her cage and make sounds and say "mm mm" or yummy or delicious and leave a small piece of it in her cage.. she'll eventually eat it... it is in their nature to be curious
