I put in a nesting box for my two parakeets, my female keeps eating off her cuttlebone, and is losing feathers. She also spends alot of time at the bottom of the cage. I don't know much of what goes on because they are more active at night now.

It is not normal for a parakeet to spend time at the bottom of a cage. Since she is losing feathers she could be molting, but if she is sick that might not be the case. Also, a bird should not be more active at night. Birds are not nocturnal animals. As for the cuttle bone, they really should just chew on it not actually eat it.

Since they are more active at night. Do you cover them? If not you should cover them at night. This gives your birds the sense that it is not time to settle down and go to sleep. You may hear them move around for a few minutes, but other than that they should go to sleep. They may also freak out the first time time you put the sheet on, but just leave it. The birds will get used to it. It will cut down on their night activity. A bird should get 10-12 hours of sleep a night.

I suggest that you get your bird looked at. Also, you said you have two parakeets. You may want to separate them since you think the one is sick that way the other one does not become ill also.

Your best bet is taking your bird to a vet.

Yes, many parakeets can become acyive at night. If they are senior, old, then the losing the feathers is normal. If they have NEVER done this before and are not over 5 years old...GO TO A VET!!!!

I'd have her looked at by a vet WHO IS EXPERIENCED WITH BIRDS. Parakeets (if you mean budgies) generally do not mate or raise eggs as a single pair: they prefer to nest and breed in colonies. She may have a mineral deficiency or she may be egg-bound: meaning an egg is stuck in the passage and this can be FATAL if not treated.
