2 years ago I took in a male DB Yellow Head Amazon who was neurotic and had been kept, as I was told, for 7 years in his 2'x2'x3' cage (1 sm. perch, a squeeky baby toy and a chew toy) with little human contact and the method the person took to get him back to the cage was to chase him with a stick or perch. I knew he was going to need time but I didn't know how nasty he was. He attacks me when I clean the cage, when I give him food/water and he flies at us when he is out of his cage to attack. With time he moved into a larger cage with more toys and then he moved himself into my other DB.Y.H.'s cage which is ruffly 5'x4'x2' a few months ago. He is no longer neurotic but he is still nasty. I have gave him time, treats,I allways talk to him, and I have resorted to wraping my hand and arm in thick material he cant bite threw to show him I am not going to back away when he attacks. I have read many topics on this all which say give time but does anyone have a idea that may calm him down?

I haven't tried the music but the tv is on all the time for the birds. Forgot to mention that.. Thank you for that tip...

I know some birds just aint cut out to be pets and I have been leaning on the fact that Pookie will never trust people to the extent to be loving but I was hoping there might be something else I could do to calm him down so he aint attacking the cage, or me when I clean the cage.

He gets along great with Cracker, who is a female, and she tolerates him as well. I know he is more at ease with another bird rather then being by himself which is the main reason why I allowed him to stay in her cage.

I have not realy put much thought into breeding him but concidering I have a pair living together they more then likely will breed if Cracker will acept it.

I will leave this open to see if any one else may have a suggestion that I can try Thank you for the tips.

This bird has been unattended to for years. He has never learned to trust humans. The sad thing about this is parrots never forget. Some parrots just aren't fit to be pets. Unfortunately, this sounds like your case. Many times a parrot will be happier when put into a breeding situation. How is he getting along with the other amazon? This may not be what you want to hear. But, its a fact that some birds will never be good pets. It's been 2 years now with no improvements. I would look to get him into a breeding program. Especially if he is getting along with your other amazon. This tells me that he at least knows that he is a bird and may be much happier with his own kind.

Try music , and what your doing is right play calming nature music for a while then play other music see how he reacts. He will show whta his likes and dislikes are continue to show him love and he will come around just you deal with him till he is calm then you can add more people to show him love. patience is the key to show abused animals love. wish you all the luck in the world.
