Save your money on bird seed by using black oil sunflower seed only. The small weed seed plants are growing every where. and you will be surprised how many"sparrows" are not .Look closer and you will probably see house finches and purple finches they have small patches of rose color on them . and as spring arrives some of these sparrows will turn into gold finches .Color in the winter birds is different than in the spring and summer. I am surprised you have not mentioned cardinals or tufted titmice or juncos . Maybe get a bird book.
I just thought about another situation . If you are in a recently developed addition lacking trees and shrubs there will be a shortage of bird varieties till folks get the trees and shrubs growing.

You can help attract more birds to your garden by providing more than just food. Birds need water and shelter, also. Try planting shrubs and lower level plants, preferably native plants. Put your feeders in protected areas. Water is another thing birds need. Keep it fresh. If you can afford it consider getting a drip system, so they can hear the water.
I assume you are in the UK or Europe since you use the term garden, rather than yard. My in laws live north of London and get really nice birds. They feed black oil sunflower mostly, along with bread that has left over fat drippings. They have a couple of different type feeders and also have a little platform near the ground.

Use a good quality wild bird food which includes black oil sunflower seed. Hang the feeder within 20' of a tree, preferably evergreen, they can use for shelter. Some birds are primarily ground feeders (blue jays, juncoes, etc.) so sprinkle some of the food on the ground. If there are goldfinches in your area use a finch feeder for thistle seed.
Also, in the winter (insects are scarce) and spring (protein is good for nesting time) it's good to put out a suet block.
Give them time to find your feeder. Patience, they'll come.
Have fun.

The birds in our garden quite like the bags of fat balls you can buy in most garden centres. in fact it is amazing to sit here and watch pigeons and magpies tring to work out a way to get at the feeders intended for smaller birds - the pigeons have cracked it but the magpies are rubbish!
we get blue ****, great ****, robins, starlings, wood pigeons and jays in our garden on a regular basis.
edit
the **** should read t1ts - didn't realise this would be deemed offensive language!

Your kids will enjoy making those seed balls using lard. It's great to involve them with bird feeding/watching projects. If you have a bird table, they'll enjoy putting scraps out, jacket potatoes etc. If you join the RSPB as a family, they provide masses of information on good feeding tips, and various projects for the whole family to enjoy too. Have fun!

Put more than seeds out.Put out dried fruit such as currants.
You could also buy some maggots from a fishing shop and stick them in an old box somewhere warm like an airing cupboard till they turn into brown pupae.Blackbirds love these.
