I have a sparrow that I rescued from a dog when it was about two days old. It is now fully feathered and I"m curious about its sex. Is there different plumage for males and females? It looks like we're going to be keeping him (her?) as he is fully imprinted on humans.

The chick is a couple of months old and quite well. The leg was half bitten off and the bone is exposed. We have cleaned it and wrapped it and she seems healthy. It has been two weeks. It does not seem infected and there is no odor. We want to amputate it by using a rubber band at the joint. Do you think this will work? Or do you have any other ideas? Thanks, Diane.

I recently aqquired 2 zebra finches and then bought 2 more for them.I have found eggs in one basket and they were sitting on them all the time as they were supposed to.The other pair lay eggs and leave them which I remove and throw away.My ? is after I cleaned the cage the pair that were sitting stopped sitting on them and then she laid more eggs on top of the ones that were already there. Why did she do this and to what extent does cleaning the cage or going near them have to do with her not sitting on them any more?Is this normal to continue to lay eggs on top old eggs? Not sure if I should keep removing the egs or not.

I found a swallow on the sidewalk, and it is not flying. I am not sure of the age, or whether or not it is sick or injured. I would like to feed it but am unsure what to give it. Worms, fly's knats???

I'm house-sitting for a friend and with the job comes entertaining a parrot and a cockatiel (among other animals). The parrot is a jerk and tries to bite me when I go to pet him so I left him in his cage. Te cockatiel is real sweet though so I let him out and he is currently in my lap.

I've never had birds like these before (I had finches when I was 6 but I hardly remember that and we never took them out of the cage). How do you pet them? I've been ruffling Oberon's feathers underneath the wings and I guess he likes it (I take this cue from him not biting me).

Is that how you do it or do you do something else?

The collared aracari http://www.fotoreiseberichte.de/costarica/cr_04_235.htm

or the Green Aracari
http://www.nashvillezoo.org/piciformes/ramphastidae.htm#green_aracari

I am thinking of one as a pet.

Their personality and behavior is almost the same.

I would be happy with either one.

The only difference is the collared aracari is 2 inches bigger and is less colorful.

We love him dearly, but we're afraid he's really going to hurt someone someday. We gothim as a baby and he has always been aggressive. He was hatched in Dallas, Texas, not taken from the wild. Any ideas?

I have a Barn Swallow nest under my carport. It has been there since the spring, but I think they have just had thier first batch of nestlings. I have decided not to park my car completely under the carport to give the birds some space, as well as to keep any of the cats that roam my neighborhood from using my vehicle as a way to get to the nest. Yesterday one of the nestlings was on the hood of my car dead....The eyes weren't open yet and there were very few feathers. I know it didn't fall all the way over there, and there were no footprints on my hood to indicate a cat may have put it up there. Will the adults remove any of the nestlings from the nest if they die.....or if they have some other problem? Or does anyone else have any ideas on what could have happend? I am thinking the whole survival of the fittest, but how did it get on the hood of my car?
