The chick is a couple of months old and quite well. The leg was half bitten off and the bone is exposed. We have cleaned it and wrapped it and she seems healthy. It has been two weeks. It does not seem infected and there is no odor. We want to amputate it by using a rubber band at the joint. Do you think this will work? Or do you have any other ideas? Thanks, Diane.

I would instead of amputating it's leg that you think of ways to make a prosthetic device for it (seriously, no kidding here). I've had some success with this for herons that have had partial amputations. Make sure the area is cushioned and that you clean the area daily as you do not want the exposed bone to get an infection. It's just a thought. A one-legged chicken wouldn't do very well with other chickens; it might by itself for a little while. But I urge you to consider how happy it will truly be. If it doesn't seem like it's happy, then you may want to consider euthanasia.

Do you know that amputating the leg of a bird is essentially giving it a death sentence? Birds need to balance their weight evenly. You would create an animal that is incapable of survival. Are you going to hold it up so it can move, eat, crap? If a leg is injured severly enough to warrant amputation....kill it and eat it. Don't be a whimpering bunny hugger. The animal should not be kept alive if there is no quality of life!!! Even thinking of keeping this animal alive is cruel and unusual punishment. If this was a wild bird.. it would be against Fish and Wildlife regulations to keep it alive and in captivity with such an injury.

I don't think a rubber band would work on a limb with a bone in it -- you would just cut off the circulation and cause gangrene. The joint is connected with tendons, etc and these would have to be cut. I would take her to a vet if you want to do this. On the other hand, if she is healing OK, the skin may grow over the bone.

This chick is a living being with nerve endings and pain receptacles. Don't just put a rubber band on it. How would that feel on your leg? Do one of 2 things. Take it to a vet or kill it quickly and humanely, preferably the first.

put a ruber band on that leg and put the chicken in a cage it cannot move around in and fatten it up. Feed it all day long all of your scraps and then when it gets real big and fat chops its head off. skin it and eat it. You need a recipee for southern fried chicken? mmmmmmmmmmmmm

Maybe, you should go to a vet so they can do it. Because they Know what they are doing and if you do it you don't want it to get infected. Good Luck! Poor Chicken!!!!!

Good grief! The leg won't grow back! If the bird doesn't appear to be sick and there's no sign of infection.Chop of it's head and have it for dinner!

Do not attempt this yourselves. Take the chick to the vets.

yes a rubber band will work.. or string..it will cut the blood flow off and the leg will eventually die and fall off.
