Depends on the bird. If you're talking about a typical pet bird, like a parrot, etc. most are not sexually dimorphic (meaning you can tell by looking) and must be DNA tested. ($20 bucks through Avian Biotech) As far as wild birds go, most males are brighter and a little larger.

That depends on the specie.
Some species can be visually sexed
Budgies- males have blue ceres (skin around nose- females have a pink or brown cere
Green Aracari or Guyana Toucanet- Male has a Black head, female has a brown head.
In eclectus parrots males are green and females are red.
African Greys- The male has a flat wedge shaped head. The female has a more dome topped head.
Cockatoos- In cockatoos females have brown eyes and males have black, but you have to look carefully, a DNA test is the best way to be sure in a cockatoo.
In most other species a DNA test is the best. I've had my birds DNA sexed, even my Grey which I know for a fact is a male, and the DNA results said male.
If you have any other questions you can email me at fatwhale90@yahoo.com
I hope this helps

The only true way to sex a bird is through DNA testing.
Only with the eclectus can you tell the sex of the birds- females are ruby colored and the males are green.
All other parrots require a DNA test to tell if its a boy or girl-

you can not generaly sex a bird you have to have a test done which can be done by a feather test which you send of and then will say , as some people say like with cockatiels you can tell by colour which is not true as mine doesnt go by the rule of being a male through its colours as tested as girl . Its generally hard to sex a bird as organs are all inside and cant be seen

There are different ways,,,,,,,,but you need to specify what kind of bird you are talking about. I use to have 26 birds, still have 2. Take cockatiels, the females have stripes under their tail feathers. The males don't.
The Latinos are hard to tell so it's best to put them in with a definant male. But I've never seen a male Latino.

An easy way to determine bird sexes from a distance is that they usually differ in their plumage. Males have different colors to attract the female.

Most parrots are hard to tell by just looking, The Eclectus is one of the only parots that you can see becuse malkes are allways green and hens are Red,
the easiest way is to take a drop of blood and send it to a Avian lab. I use a very good lab in Texas, RAL 972-960-2221 Ask for Ernie or dave.

If it is a pet bird, there is a DNA testing facility in FL. They will send a kit and you fill out your info, pull out a few of the birds breast feathers, place them in the mini zip-loc bag provided & send it back to FL with the fee. They will mail & email the results.

If they dont have different colors for different sexes, a blood test may be the only way. Ask a vet about it.
