Just as humans you can't MAKE someone like you, this applies to your little friend.
As others have said, spend more time with your bird, Talk very calmly, Whispers can help.
Treats, offer treats and if you can, make a trip to your local pet store and buy some Millet, Most birds enjoy Millet.
Only provide Millet when your bird is with you.
There are foods that you don't want to give to your bird, join a bird forum and or site and ask for help, most bird site post foods not to offer your bird as they will harm not help.
Over time you will learn what treats your bird likes and what he/she doesn't like, but only offer these treats while the birds is with you.
But remember, you can't MAKE any person & or animal like you, you must earn there trust and companionship.
Good Luck.

I would try spending more time around it. I just recently introduced a five-year-old macaw to my home. The past owners were afraid to play or mess with him. First off don't let the bird know that you might be afraid of it. Get to know its personality slowly. I would let my bird out and eat breakfast close to his cage and talk to him. Bring it treats that it really likes (healthy one of course. Preserved foods can cause cancer in birds). Don't reward bad behavior though. Birds take a lot of time. They are VERY social critters. Don't close it off in a back bedroom. Place the cage in the room where you or family members congregate the most. Make sure the cage isn't by a tv or a drafty window. Most birds will become attached to one or two people in the family. Some birds even go through a sort of depression when they are separated from them. It will take time to build this kind of relationship with your bird. Once this happens you and your bird can do anything. My nanday will even let me dress him up like a princess. You are it's partner so get to know it better.

Now this really depends on what species of bird it is. If its a parrot, a macaw, a cockatoo etc, they are very intelligent and social birds and this might be unusual behavior. However if its a dove or pigeon, a canary or a finch, well they are prey-birds and they will never be comfortable around anything bigger than they are, anything which could eat them, its just Nature!

You should understand, and this goes for most pets, including dogs and cats, that male animals will always feel more "affinity" towards female humans and vice versa, female animals will bond better with male humans. That is appearantly "Mother Nature's Way".......

be ptient ok; it took my parakeet 4 years to come on me and eat a crumb. now she is 7 and everytime i sit down to eat she is on me 3 seconds later checking out what i have!! of course i don't give her junk food but i give her fruit. your bird has to earn your trust so give it time and you will be rewarded.
