That depends on the specie.

A parakeet, budgie, cockatiel, lovebird, quaker parakeet, mustache parakeet, and ringneck parakeet for example cant bite of your finger but can cause damage that may require stitches.

Where as poicephalus parrots, such as senegal parrots, meyers parrots, red bellied parrots, uncape parrots, and jardines parrots despite their small size have a lot of crushing power in their beak and can easily bite of a portion of your finger. But they rarely bite at full force to do that much damage.

BUT an african grey, amazon parrots, and large macaws can easily bite off your finger, and african grey isnt as likely but has still has the crushing powert to do so. A macaw can their large beak is designed to eat hard fruits and nuts, so they naturally have the force to do it. in a blue and gold macaw it is estimated they have a bite force of 200lbs per square inch. Trust me when you see a macaw crack a walnut or macadamia nut, or cocnut, you know that beak is a force to be reconed with.

I've ben bitten by many parrots, from budgies, to green wing macaws. I havent lost any fingers, but from being bit by them if I wasnt quick enough I could've lost a finger. So be careful and know the birds body language and you arent as likely to get bit.

I hope this helps

Of all the times I've heard someone say a parrot can bite a finger off, I have yet to hear of it actually happening. That being said, I know for a fact that a macaw can break a finger. I worked in a bird store years ago, and a customer had her finger broken by our extremely large scarlet macaw.

That being said, I'm pretty sure you can break your finger by biting it yourself. I doubt that someone would have a finger truly severed by a parrot, but I would not put it beyond a parrot to crush a finger.

Larger parrots species have very strong bite force. I have no doubt the could take off a finger. What gets me is they don't? I've never met a parrot owner missing fingers. I hear one side saying you have to be quick and the other saying you can't be afraid and back down? I've never touched a macaw but had a decent size cockatoo at an old job. That was absolutely the sweetest bird I had ever met. Sometimes she would grab and hold my finger but never bit down. Even when I would wrestle Her she just loved to play. She would ride around on my shoulder all day and never drew blood. I really wish I had bought her but at the time I had a wolf and she would have killed my bird. I should add though I have met some truly evil birds but they have all been smaller like conure size.

An amazon parrot can bite your finger to the bone without really trying. If it was really mad at you, a little further and you would be missing a finger. This parrot has no problem cracking chicken bones in pieces to get at the marrow, and yet can hold a potato chip and eat the edges without breaking it.

The only time I have ever even heard of this happening was when a Moluccan Cockatoo supposedly bit off a middle finger of a child.

I believe that Moluccan Cockatoos and Hyacinth Macaws are able to apply 300 lbs of pressure with their beak. So it is possible. But luckily it's not something you hear of often.

Depending on the type of bird. A Macaw has the crushing power of 2500lbs in it's beak and I can promise you if they use that full power you will be minus a Finger. Umbrella Cockatoos have the crushing power of 1500 lbs, they can do some serious damage if they try.

Best rule of thumb, dont stick you finger in a bird's mouth.
