I recently aqquired 2 zebra finches and then bought 2 more for them.I have found eggs in one basket and they were sitting on them all the time as they were supposed to.The other pair lay eggs and leave them which I remove and throw away.My ? is after I cleaned the cage the pair that were sitting stopped sitting on them and then she laid more eggs on top of the ones that were already there. Why did she do this and to what extent does cleaning the cage or going near them have to do with her not sitting on them any more?Is this normal to continue to lay eggs on top old eggs? Not sure if I should keep removing the egs or not.

I have zebra finches, and they will always lay eggs unless you separate them and leave them alone. Whenever I want my female to lay eggs that *hopefully* will eventually hatch, I separate her and the male into a breeding cage. The bottom of the cage is several inches from the tray so that when I do clean the cage I don't have to disturb them. I also keep the feeder/waterer close to the bottom and removable from the outside so that I don't have to bother them much. When you disturb them, it draws them off the nest and they tend not to sit so good. Both the male and the female will sit on the eggs and take care of the babies, which take about a month to raise up until they can take care of themselves.

I used to have Zebra finches, too, and had the same experience. But I was young and busy and never found the answer. I don't know, but I'll be happy to find out.
