Can canola oil be substituted for shortening in baking recipes?

I want to bake something sweet, but I am trying to reduce restrict eating or using things like shortening, so I don't have any in the house, and I only have canola oil or butter (I also have a tub of Country Crock spreadable margarine)

I found a recipe for Snickerdoodle cake, and it calls for 1/2 cup of shortening.

But, I don't use or have shortening, and only have butter, oil or margarine. So, instead of using shortening, can I use one of these for the cake?

If so, what are the equivalent measurements?

I cooked with jalapeno peppers today (it was my first time and no one ever told me to use gloves).

Now my fingers feel like they are going to burst into flames at any moment. I am near tears.

So far I have tried......

1. Soaking them in milk.
2. Soaking them in cold water.
3. Bleach
4. Lemon
5. Coffee grounds
6. Aloe
7. Oatmeal lotion
8. Vegetable Oil
9. Dawn dish detergent

Nothing is working and I can't think of anything else. What should I do next? Any suggestions welcome.

Farm Stand sales you have 180 tomatoes and 15 onions left over from your garden. You want to use these to make jars of tomato sauce and jars of salas to sell at a farm stand. A jar of tomato sauce requires 10 tomatoes and 1 onion, and a jar of salsa requires 5 tomatoes and 1/4 onlion. You will make a profit of $2 on every jar of tomato sauce sold and a profit of $1.50 on every jar of salsa sold. The owner of the farm stand wants at least three times as many jars of tomato sauce as jars of salsa. How many jars of each should you make to maximize profit?

Was just pondering this while I boiled a pot of eggs. (and wondering why I always put a cloth in the bottom of the pan ~ ah, because MOM did).

When I was a kid I thought my mom was the best cook in the world! But now that I'm older, I've found I prefer my cooking over hers....and it's funny because she does too! But I use lots of herbs and spices, so I think that has a lot to do with it.

How about you??

I am looking for some different recipes this year to try out on the fam. and I would love to hear everyone's favorite traditional recipes for the holidays that I might like to try. My all time favorite is chicken breast meat boiled to make its own broth with those frozen (Remes, or something like that) noodles cooked in the broth and served over mashed potatoes with a big buttered hot roll on the side.. Okay, Im making myself hungry now.. Your turn... Lets hear it!!

When I was younger, I lived in Abilene Texas and attended Stephen F Austin Elementary. There was a lady that worked in the cafeteria, and she made the best chocolate cookies...I am not really even sure if they were Sugar cookies, but that it the closest that I can come to describing them

I vaguely remember a recipie for apple pie that I made in my food prep class. If I remember correctly, we covered the apples in baking soda and then sprinkled cinnamon and sugar. Does this sound right? I think the baking soda was used to thicken the juice.

I am craving it, its warm during the day, but it gets chilly at night and the cool air makes me think of potatoe soup like my mom used to make, and stews and chilles, but how do you make potatoe soup. My mom is no longer around to ask.
