Ok, our family is REALLY boring when it comes to food, and I always do the starter, which nearly always ends up being prawn cocktail (oh yay) or a soup I make.
So, this year, I thought i'd do something a bit .... different!!
So, I was thinking along the lines of...
seared whole prawns on a watercress salad with sweet chilli dressing..?

That was as far as I got before thinking of food made me hungry and had to go and get something to eat...
So, I need suggestions for a seafoody starter (prawns, crab, shrimp, oyster etc etc) but no garlic, because it is a very English-food-orientated family.
And prefereably something cold, that can be part prepared on the 24th December.
Thanks

My uncle and aunt's one year anniversary is coming up. They're having a cookout to celebrate. The thing is, it isn't your average cookout...it's a bit fancier. There won't be hot dogs and potato chips or anything like that.

So, I'm up for suggestions. I already have planned two desserts that I'm taking (this chocolate dessert thing and key lime tarts). Now I need some sort of side or something. Thanks!

I have a good German knife set, but it is getting dull and when I try to use the sharpening stick, I seldom make them sharper, and when I do, they don't stay sharp. Do I need to have them done by a professional, or is there a better way?

My boyfriend's birthday is coming up and I thought it would be best, if not only nice, if I cooked dinner for that night. Something candle lit and cute s**t like that. LOL. He pretty much would die for anything delicious, loves pasta and cheesecake. I might as well just stick to that, but I would like specific ideas. Do you know how many kinds of pasta there are out there? Please be specific. You may provide anything else that is just mind blowing to taste. It does not have to be pasta. Thanks.
P.S. Cake ideas would be nice too.LOL

I'm having pan fried salmon, with devilled eggs.

I'd prefer it not to be too "carby" as we're on atkins.

I'm planning to make baked home made macaroni and cheese tonight. I substitute the butter with the spray on calorie free/fat free butter, skim/fat free milk , and fat free cheddar cheese. I've made it before and it tastes awesome, even with all the fat free ingredients you cannot taste the difference. What's a good side dish to serve with mac and cheese? And please do not tell me that mac and cheese is a side dish, heard it before. Mac and cheese is pretty heavy to be served as a main dish, I'm just looking for a small healthy side dish to go with it. Thanks everyone

I planted a garden for the first time this year and have alot of tomatoes. I wanted to make spaghetti sauce and freeze it but I can not find a recipe online that uses fresh garden tomatoes. I know I need to cook them on the stove top but I don't know if I need to seed them and what herbs to use. I would appreciate a good Italian speghetti sauce recipe if anyone has one. Thank you.

I'm planning a lazy weekend with just me, my TV and a few snacks for company and I need a few ideas from you guys. My favourite snack is some kind of crispy thing and a good dip to go with it but I've tried the shop bought dips and they're not all that good. Does anybody have a recipe for a really good homemade dip I could try out, it doesn't even have to be a proper recipe maybe just something you stumbled on by accident? I usuall sit with some Pringles and a bottle of salad cream if I'm being really laz but I thought I try something different this time.
I'll leave the question on all week and try any ideas I get out at the weekend then choose my favourite, thanks :)
