Ok, our family is REALLY boring when it comes to food, and I always do the starter, which nearly always ends up being prawn cocktail (oh yay) or a soup I make.
So, this year, I thought i'd do something a bit .... different!!
So, I was thinking along the lines of...
seared whole prawns on a watercress salad with sweet chilli dressing..?
That was as far as I got before thinking of food made me hungry and had to go and get something to eat...
So, I need suggestions for a seafoody starter (prawns, crab, shrimp, oyster etc etc) but no garlic, because it is a very English-food-orientated family.
And prefereably something cold, that can be part prepared on the 24th December.
Thanks

How about some lovely oysters on the half-shell with a glass of champagne. A nice way to start dinner and toast it as well. (a little twist from the prawn cocktail).
If not...I love the salad you suggest.
If you were interested in doing something hot... curried prawns would be nice (and of English taste, no?)
I also like smoked salmon on classic brown bread with cream cheese. Maybe a little capers too. Very nice as a starter.
Hungry now....must run to the fridge and find something to eat!

How about home-made salmon timbales? They're dead easy, and you can make them the day before, and they look rather stunning, considering their simplicity.
Make one per person. Line a ramekin with clingflim, leaving plenty over the edges.
Line a ramekin with smoked salmon, ensuring that there is a lot over the edges.
Mash up some cooked prawns with seasoning of your choice - a bit of lime and chilli would work well, but just enough that it's subtle, not blow your head off. If you use a bit of chilli dipping sauce, that would bind the mixture together nicely. Add to the salmon-lined ramekin, to a half-way point.
Fill the rest of the ramekin with salmon pate. (Of course, you can fill it with anything that you like; it's up to you!)
Fold over the smoked salmon to create a parcel, which has been stuffed with the prawn mixture. Pull over the rest of the clingfilm, so that the parcel is tight. Place a plate on top (to keep the bottom of the ramekin flat) and chill in the fridge.
Turn out when needed; dress with a bit of rocket, or something like that.
As an extra decoration, place a cooked king prawn at the bottom of the ramekin, after the clingfilm has been done and before the smoked salmon. That looks pretty cool!
Enjoy!

This should be dull enough but yet different enough for you....
* Dried Shitake Mushroom (some say Chinese Mushroom), soak to soften and stalk removed
* 100g minced pork
* 50g minced prawns (about 100g prawns)
* Cornflour
* ½ teaspoon Oyster Sauce
* A pinch of salt
Directions
1. Mix minced pork and minced prawns together with a pinch of salt.
2. Dap some corn flour on the mushroom so as to ‘stick’ the meat to the mushroom.
3. Scoop some meat and put it on the mushroom.
4. Place the mushroom in a deep dish and steam it for 15 mins or cooked thoroughly.
5. Remove and place it on a plate. Retain the sauce.
6. In a pot, bring sauce and oyster sauce to a boil.
7. Stir in some corn flour mixture to thicken the sauce.
8. Pour the sauce over and serve.
9. Use peas, corn or carrots to decorate it

Why not have a selection of mixed seafoods on every ones individual plate ....like a tapas version.... mix cream cheese with some spices and make salmon cones (roll up side ways and stuff ..... sounds naughty!!!!!), your prawn salad, and some crab pate with sprinkled crab sticks on top, mussels in a vinaigrette (use a dressing for salad, finished off with slices of brown bread, french toast and lemon!!!! Everyone loves a 'pick and mix'.
Mmmmm now I'm hungry.
Or since you like making soup - how about a seafood chowder, you could make it xmas eve and heat it up after the 'church service' in the morning!!!!!! lol
Rem my invite in the post!!!!!
And to annoy - well you could get cod roe!!!!!!

oh, cooking new recipes could be a lot exciting! test with some recipe books, possibly get a style of recipe books that asserts f4 aspects or much less! i don't have somewhat some time to cook dinner, so i exploit a slow cooker a lot. here is an basic meal: a million rump roast (of regularly occurring length) a million kit onion soup combination (lipton) 3 or 4 cups water 6-8 potatoes sparkling potatoes, place roast and potatoes in slow cooker, upload water and soup combination, cook dinner on low for 8 hours. the beef will almost disintegrate! you could the two peel the potatoes, or bypass away the skins on . i individually desire to bypass away the floor on, they are greater powerful for you that way!

Why not Angels on horseback? You can wrap bacon(rashers?) around scallops in advance and then cook off in oven quickly before serving. I think the name is appropriate for the holidays. Another idea is small crab cakes, small ramekins of seafood Au gratin, Clams Casino(clams on the half shell w/a bit of onion, peppers,bacon, and cheese broiled). This is all common American fare. The recipes are readily available on Foodnetwork.com where you'll find a million more. Happy Holidays in advance.

Funny - when I first saw the question, I was going to suggest hot chilli sauteed prawns served on a rocket salad which is very close to your own suggestion!!
How about that roast smoked salmon served with salad? Easy and yummy!!

How about filo wrapped prawns with sweet thai chilli dip (go on, be adventurous!) Or you could cook them in bread crumbs and serve with cocktail sauce or even skewer them and serve prawn kebabs.

I have made smoked trout (or salmon) pancakes for the last 2 years on Christmas day and they have been very popular.
Make the normal pancake mix as you would do on shrove Tuesday add strips of smoked fish, creme fresh or soured cream and chopped chives, then fold or roll up, one pancake per person as they are quite rich and they can be served hot or cold.
