The other night me and my brother both got in way past our curfew. i knew that meant for me that I'd be getting a spanking. But my parents have said that since my brother is 13 now, as a boy he doesn't need to be spanked anymore. They say that it loses it's effectivness on boys after 13. But they said that girls still benefit from a spanking no matter how old. So last night I got a bare-bottom spanking from my dad and grounded while my younger brother just got sent to his room and grounded. I'm 15 and dad and mom said that as long as I live under their roof, if I mess up, ill still be spanked. I was just wondering if this was normal or fair, or maybe they are right, I mean girls are more emotional, does spanking work on girls better than boys?

We are having my daughter's first birthday party and my mother in law has chosen to go to a friend's daughter's wedding instead. That is not the worst part - We had already discussed/resolved the wedding/party conflict this with her 3 months ago and she said she coming, lying all along, knowing fulll well that she had already booked her tickets in advance. Now she drops the bomb on us a week before the party. She says she never said yes, but rather said "ok" . She said it only matters that she is around on her real birthday, which she won't be because my husband and I are taking out our daughter for a special day as a family. This is not the first time my MIL has dropped us for a better offer. It appears as if the novelty of her granddaughter has worn off. Don't even get me started on what she did before our wedding...Any opinions?

I have a three year old girl and an eight year old boy. My sister has a four year old who is a holy terror, she lets him boss everyone around and doesn't show that she's mad with him even when she attempts discipline; it's "OK, sweetie, mommy has to put you in time-out now", and a hug and a kiss. I'm opposed to spanking generally, but there are times--the boy has always been serious, quiet and generally well-behaved, but he girl is very different. We use a wooden spoon when necessary, but that's some few times a year, it's more of a threat than anything--"mama, we have to get the wooden spoon, she hasn't (whatever)", at which time she'll quit pitching her fit and do what she's supposed to. I feel that too much beating a child creates a sullen and angry teen-ager, disrespectful even into the mid-twenties. It seems no discipline at all does the same thing, though. I'd especially like to hear opinions from those with more than one child.

I don't want to get him flowers, b/c that would embarrass him. Does anyone know what the norm is for boys? Balloons? Nothing? I want to acknowledge his hard work in some way.

How much do you think its cost to raise a girl for 18 years? Not including rent or medical. Just the price of food, clothing, and nessesity needs from a lower to middle class family? Any ideas?

I have been with my boyfriend for 2 years Tues. May 1. He is 24 and I am 27. We live together and have lived together almost from the begining. In this 2 years his sister has stolen from me and I have let him take care of it but she kept stealing. Now her and her boyfriend of 6 months have moved a way and are not next door. I thought it would be better but it is not. She is pregant and a getting married in July. At our house I have just been told. He wouldn't even let me bring any one there because he was afraid people will know where he lives or steal stuff. Well now she will invite everyone she know and they will be there. Which he know that I want to get married at our house and she just keeps taking from me. I know he is not ready to get married but there is not going to be nothing left for me to do. She is having the first grand child and getting married where I want and I can't get married there because they will say I am coping. Well I just don't know what else to do. Help me.

People tell me I "shelter" my 2 younger kids too much (4 & 6yrs old) and that I am codependent. I keep my kids close and I cry just think about them growing up and leaving me. Im pretty sure its because I lost my mom and dad two weeks apart 2 yrs ago and about 10 yrs ago I lost 2 other children during a divorce (LONG story, but husban had more money & better lawyer) I'm still very close to them and they are older now and understand ALL that happened back then. In fact, they both kinda don't care much for their dad now that they know whole story. Anyway, I also found out that I was adopted a couple yrs ago and that my sister was actually my mom. I just think lots of people have their problems & counseling isn't going to help. You just have to deal with it and hope that time will help heal some wounds. Shouldnt it be up to me if I get counseling or not. I think Im fine.

During this story I'm going to call the one who raised me and adopted me my"mom" (actually my grandma) and I'll call my birh mom my "birth mom" (even though I grew up knowing her as my sister) There were 3 other sisters too (which were actually my aunts) A couple years ago my "mom" was very sick, and knew she didn't have long to live. So she wanted to be there with my "birth mom" to tell me the truth before she passed away. My "birth mom" begged her and my other 3 "sisters" to NEVER tell me. So they all promised Well 2 weeks after that my dad (the man that adopted me) passed away too! A couple months later my "birth mom" told me she was really my mom. Long story short. She claims she tried to get me several times and my "mom" wouldnt let her. My other sisters said she nevercame back that she neglected me &my mom actualy rescued me from her house skinney, 8in worms in my diaper locked in my room with nothing but a matress. Cld u ever have rlship w/ her? Better if not lied?

Okay, I am sixteen and live in Ontario, I am legally allowed to move out of my parents home. Well, I told my mom that I want to start providing for myself and move out on my own, which is true. The reason why I want to move out? Its personal, and I'm not allowed to tell people why. Her reaction? She got angry at me and hardly talked to me on the walk we took after I told her. Why is she mad at me?

I have two brothers, 14 and 9. My parents are divorced and we live with my mom. The 14 year old, "Matt" has severe anger problems and takes it ALL out on "Joey" the little one. Matt wails on him and calls him names and screams at him to the point where if Joey even tries to defend himself he gets it even worse. A lot of this happens when we're home alone. My mom has him in counseling but it's not working. It's just become a "normal" thing in our house and I constantly hear Matt smacking Joey around. Tonight, Matt threw a chair, knocked four more over, and swung at me. I am 17 years old. I want to get out of this, and only have one more year but my problem is- what about Joey??? I can't leave him someone bigger than him that will physically and emotionally tear him down! What do I do??

My sister always lets her kids have control. They run everything in her house. They are theifs, brats, lairs, one of her kids has done hard time. From when these kids was small, we have told her and told her that she needs to "straighten" them out. She has never set rules, her reasoning is that we had so many rules when growing that it made her childhood hell. I had those same rules and had a great childhood. Now the youngest is almost 16 and she comes crying to us that he beats her. Her boyfriend left her because of this. He tells lies to the neighbors, they complain, he threats the neighbors. So now she asks us what should she do?

They drink all day long and his dad can say nasty things when he is really drunk. They are very good at hiding the fact they are intoxicated, but people who know them well can tell. My mum recently had a big argument with his mum about gossiping about me behind my back wen she was drunk and since then I am very reluctant to go over to their house, they will not visit us because it means they can't drink if they drive. Is it wrong to deny my daughter of spending time with her grandparents?

Okay my hubby and I have only been married for a year and a half. He is in the army an is currently overseas. My sister in law is going on 19 and was seeing a guy who is old enough to be her father. Anyway, she called me today telling me that she needed to talk to me about something important. I call her back and we talked and then she has the nerve to say to me that she is going to move in with me. She didnt even ask me if it was okay. She just assumes that she is going to move in. and then after that she has the nerve to ask me if she could borrow $20.

I am sorry, but she is 19. I think it is about time she got herself a job. She graduates from highschool supposedly in 2-3 weeks.

I dont want her moving in w/me because I am trying to take care of my own life. I have enough stress dealing with my husband being gone and having to care for my animals and such. And my sister in law is one of those type who live off of other people to get by in life. Help me! Am I a bad person?
