Laptops & Notebooks - December 2006

I can't get the Volume level bar indicator back onto my screen. I am NOT talking about the icon on the taskbar which opens up the audio levels box. When I used to adjust the sound/mute buttons on my laptop (Dell Insp,Wind XP Pro) I used to get an auto pop up indicator showing what level the sound was being set to. It has vanished! Help!!!

Has anybody done this? I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop, and have physically broken both sets of USB ports (was dumb enough to carry it around with things plugged in - no lectures please, I know, I know...it was stupid, but it's done now) There is (or was) a pair on the back and a pair on one side.

Has anyone replaced these? How hard is it? Or should I take it someplace to have done? I'm not against paying somebody to have it done if that's the wise way to go, but don't want to be without my laptop for very long.

I'm not the world's expert on computer hardware, but did successfully replace the keyboard on my previous (Dell) laptop.

Thanks for any advice.

my ibook started Doing everything REALLY SLOW last nite, and even when i restarted, it took forever to restart, and when i removed the battery at the back, and replaced it, my ibooks stuck in the booting up mode. help!?

I am looking to buy a laptop for myself. I know nothing about them. I only know how to use them. I am looking for just a basic one so I can put my pictures on it from my digital camera and check my e-mail. Can anyone recommend a good one? I am not looking to pay over $1000 for it.

I have a Dell Inspiron, w/Windows XP pro, and whenever I would adjust the sound level or mute button, a bar indicator would appear on the screen. It has mysteriously vanished! I have looked in all the "help" and "indexs" for a way to restore this, but to no avail. I am sure it is an easy thing I am missing....I think there's a malfunction somewhere between the keyboard and my chair...

is a dell inspiron 7500 and i have no idea how to put it back. i still have all the pieces. and it seems it should be able to go back but it just keeps coming off. anyone know a quick fix? =]

This is for a Mac book pro and I plan to use mostly Final Cut for editing. I know the 7200 would be faster than the 5400 but I don't know how much faster. I would be sacrificing storage space for speed and I'm trying to figure out if that is worth it. On one hand- If I ran out of storage space it would be okay with me if I needed an external drive to store the video files on- On the other hand- If I got an external drive would it just depend on the speed of the external drive and not the internal drive anyway? the 160 gig 5400 is 90 dollars more but I'm not worried about price- Just performance. I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks!

I got a brand new Asus laptop with Windows XP in it. When I turned it on for the first time it asked me to reboot it. I put in the CD that came with it and it started (I thought) rebooting, but then it wrote that it couldn't go on with the preinstalation and I should do something else first. I can't remember what. I think it said I had to download the primary OS first, but I might be writing nonsense now. Anyway, I clicked ok and tried another CD that came with the computer, but it wouldn't do anything. Since then when I turn the laptop on there's only a blinking sign and it would not do absolutely anything. It wouldn't start even the CD that it did a little bit at the beggining. Can anyone help me? Thank you!

And what features do I need? I like to download music, audiobooks, and movies. I upload lots of high def photos as well. Not sure if there's anything else you need to know...

I know nothing about computer jargon. So please explain the words you use. Like if you recommend 20 megabytes bc that makes movies download faster, etc. (I made that up; that was just an example.)
