Formating will wipe everything you have on it off.
Do you have a restore disc or all the program discs needed to replace everything?
Can you access anything in safe mode?

First off.. if you are using XP or something similiar, are you logged in as an administrator. If not you will not be able to access MSCONFIG.

You want to try to get to the RESTORE option. then follow the prompts to reset the computer to a few days or weeks ago when it was working well.

Lacking that, the laptop came with some recovery disks.. these will let you boot the machine from the A drive and perhaps you can access the RESTORE option from that format.

Once it is re-set, run your virus and ad-ware checker.

Then delete as much as you need to to make certain that you have at least 10% of your hardrive as free space. Then run the cleanuup and delete all of the wastebasket

then run defrag..

then try your machine again.

good luck

Seems like you have spyware or malware or something similar like that. I got a feeling that your computer has been turned into bots.

Try to download free spybots cleaner from http://www.safer-networking.org/ and also run your and update your antivirus to the latest. You can also download something called pslist and pskill from sysinternals.com to list and kill all of the questionable program.

If all failed, i suggest you to get external usb hdd and do backup and then wipe clean your hdd if you can afford it. Usually it takes a while to clean up

It is always is a good idea to re-install Windows every so often. Go ahead format it. Just make sure you backup important stuff i.e music, photos, documents and etc.

do you get any error messages? What were you doing when you got the problem?

If you can run antivirus try to scan...if not, just format the disk
but don't forget to backup your files!!
