The original 5 1/4 in floppies were floppy, When they sized them down to 3 1/4 in they got rid of the floppieness and kept the name.

Once upon a time they were. They were also the size of a dinner plate! Even the 3.5 inch floppy disks are floppy if you take off the hard plastic housing. Basically the same stuff cassette tapes are made of (or have they gone out of style, too?)

They are pretty floppy if you break open their protective case and remove them. They are a disc of thin coated plastic, and will flop back and forth if you wave them in the air.

they are called floppy because they easily flop in the garbage since they are so OLD! I guess they knew long ago they would be useless

If you were to break open the hard case around the actual disk, you would see that it is made of some thin material. That disk used to be bigger and...well, floppier :)
