Can I simply switch hard drives in a laptop - assuming they are the same type, etc? I have a damaged laptop that I am selling but want to keep my hard drive and buy another (same) model. If I put my hard drive in my replacement laptop should everything work, assuming the rest of the replacement laptop is OK?

One day my laptop just quit working. The splash screen would come up only to go to a black screen with a flashing white dot in the corner. No keyboard commands would work besides the one to get into the Bios. My mother managed to wipe everything off of the hard drive, so she could start fresh and run the back-up disk that the computer made when I first got it. Upon running the disk an error came up stating there was a corrupt "boot.ini" file. Can I fix this or should I simply throw the blasted piece of technology into the wall and be done with it? More importantly... what does the file do and what could have caused it to be corrupt?

I've bought a brand new Dell Latitude C400 Ultraportable laptop, everything is fine except that the battery duration is too short (just 1.5 hour). Can I bought a longer duration battery for this laptop? Or do I have to use only this short duration type of battery of Dell Manufacture?

Thanks Everyone

I'm thinking of getting a MacBookPro and I'm scared that i wont be able to do all the things I can do on my current Toshiba laptop. Has anyone converted and noticed a difference? Ever since I got my iPod I've become such an Apple convert and I'd primarily using it for iTunes and the internet. Anyone have any advice for an Mac newbee? I used them all through college so it's not the system itself I've to get used to.

I'm looking for a laptop that is definitely under $1000 and the more inexpensive the better. I'll be using it to surf the web, email, download music, burn CDs and use MS Office possibly. I know there are some that are Vista compatible but I'm not sure how important that is...so if anyone can offer any suggestions that would be great, thanks

I use my laptop several hours a day, but 95% of the time it is plugged in. I'm told this is not good for the battery. I have an IBM Thinkpad and generally get about 1.5 - 2 hrs out of the battery. I mostly use my laptop for work (internet, PDFs, and spreadsheets) and watching movies.

I was told by a friend, that I should leave my laptop on 24/7 without turning it off. They said if I turn it off and on all the time, I will hurt the laptop. Is that true? Give me your opinion please??

My desktop is getting old and I think I will replace it with a laptop. I have $1500 and am looking for something that I can game with, although it doesn't have to be top of the line. I play the older mmo's like Asheron's Call and Ultima Online.

If you had $1500 to spend, which laptop would you get and why?

Hi,

I bought my first laptop 5 months ago, its Toshiba Tecra A7. whenever i run my laptop, the fan starts to function quitely but after a while it becomes a little bit noisy. ( noiser than most laptops which i have ever seen). what seems to be the problem, i mean is this normal?

does cpu speed has something to do with fan cooling speed and thus noise? my laptop is 2.0 GHz daul core.

do i need to replace the fan or bare the noise?

The noise comes from the area where the vent is, so i guess its from cpu fan and not from hard disk.

Thanks for your help.
