I use my laptop several hours a day, but 95% of the time it is plugged in. I'm told this is not good for the battery. I have an IBM Thinkpad and generally get about 1.5 - 2 hrs out of the battery. I mostly use my laptop for work (internet, PDFs, and spreadsheets) and watching movies.

If your laptop is able to run without the battery (just having the power supply plugged in without the battery at all) then do that, if it will not then it is reccomended to only plug it in when the battery is too low to run the laptop....leaving it plugged in causes the battery to be constantly charging and shortens the life of the battery as well as its capacity. Not to mention the heat factor.

I used to let mine run right down every so often and then give a full charge...Mind you saying that...I haven't used it for 6 months...and the battery is knackered anyway...It now has to be plugged in all the time !!!

Yes, it is bad for the battery as it overcharges. Due to overcharging time and again it may even leak, if it is not a genuine one.
