Avoid switching on and off for short periods of time, use the Stand-By option if needed, but that doesn't mean that your laptop should run 24/24. Be carefull on overheating the laptop, also.

Your friend doesn't know what he or she is talking about, regarding turning your laptop on and off. No damage is done to any computer by turning it on and off! I have a Dell laptop I use for work ... it belongs to my company. I turn it on and off all day long and there is no change in its performance.
My daughter, a college student, has a new Dell Inspiron laptop, and the only time she turns it off is when she's moving it ... to class or to bring it home. I've noticed that, literally, everyone in her dorm leaves their laptops on 24/7, so I asked why nobody turns them off ... they don't even close the lid to put the computer into its 'sleep mode' ... they just run them all the time. She told me that they're on so they stay connected to the Internet. Apparently, with so many computers constantly logging onto the school's wireless network, the servers can overload sometimes. To avoid the possibility of not being able to get on-line when they want to, everybody stays connected, all the time!
Either way, you won't hurt your computer ... leave it on ... or turn it on and off ... it makes no difference!

Internal components will wear out quicker if left switched on 24/7, but you could do more more damage if you switch it on and off regularly (more than once or twice a day). The other consideration is power consumption - even in sleep mode, you'd be amazed at how much energy is used by the laptop and therefore how much electricity you are paying for that you don't really need.

24/7 is ok only if you use it frequently - say 3 times a day - if you're not gonna use it for, say, two days, switch it off; 24/7 is based on an assunption that switching on/off is the main shock for every machine using el juice..
And more: if the laptop is new, leave it on for at least a month, that's a kind of burn in test and if something will go, you have your warranty...

Your friend is wrong. You can turn your laptop off anytime you want. That's what the power button is for.
