or a USB Wireless would be weaker than a real pre-installed one that more expensive laptops come with

If you get a good quality one it will work the same as a built in bluetooth dongle, but some of the cheaper ones work a bit differantly.
The better quality dongles are the way to go because they have better range nad are easier ti use and set up

Sure but keep in mind, its not going to provide you with a wireless internet connection! Not that you would but some people seem to think it will give you wifi.

It depends on each one. Some are stronger than others.
I reccomend getting a D-Link DBT-120
